Gravel Deluge: Truck Spill Snarls Lija Traffic

It was just another sunny morning in Lija, until a truck carrying a mountain of gravel decided to take a tumble near the roundabout. The scene that unfolded was a mix of chaos and curiosity, as commuters found their usual routes blocked by a sea of tiny rocks.

Scene of the Spill

The incident happened around 8 am, causing a significant traffic jam in the area. The truck, belonging to local construction company Malta Builders, was en route to a construction site in Birkirkara when it overturned. Witnesses reported that the truck seemed to lose balance while negotiating the roundabout, sending its precious cargo spilling onto the road.

Lija resident, Maria Grech, was one of the first to witness the scene. “I was on my way to work when I saw the truck tilt. It happened so fast, and then there was gravel everywhere. I had to turn back and take a different route,” she told Hot Malta.

Cleanup Operation

The Malta Police were quick to arrive at the scene, diverting traffic and assisting the truck driver, who fortunately escaped with minor injuries. The cleanup operation, however, was a lengthy process. A team from Malta Builders worked tirelessly to clear the road, using shovels and wheelbarrows to move the gravel to the side.

By midday, the road was finally reopened, but not before causing a significant delay for commuters. “I was stuck in traffic for over an hour,” said Lija resident, Joseph Camilleri. “It’s not the first time something like this has happened, and I hope it’s the last.”

Lessons Learned

This incident serves as a reminder of the potential hazards of heavy traffic in Malta’s busy roads. It also highlights the importance of safe driving practices, especially when maneuvering heavy vehicles. Malta Builders has since issued a statement, assuring the public that they are investigating the cause of the accident and will take necessary measures to prevent future incidents.

As for the Lija roundabout, it seems to have weathered this gravel storm, ready to face another day of Malta’s bustling traffic. But for now, commuters can breathe a sigh of relief, as the road is clear and traffic is flowing smoothly once again.
