Lija Roundabout Resurfacing Begins After Truck Crash
Truck Crash Reshapes Lija’s Roundabout: Resurfacing Begins
Early Monday morning, the usually bustling Lija roundabout at the junction of Triq il-Kbira and Triq San Pawl was a flurry of activity, not from the usual morning rush, but from a cleanup operation following a truck crash that left a significant dent in the road. The incident, which fortunately resulted in no serious injuries, has set in motion plans to resurface part of the roundabout, a move that’s been long anticipated by Lija residents.
Crash Scene: A New scene for Lija
Pictures from the scene showed the truck, a large white articulated lorry, jackknifed across the roundabout, its trailer resting at an awkward angle. The crash, which occurred around 6 am, caused significant traffic disruption, with commuters diverted through side streets as emergency services worked to clear the scene. The truck, carrying a full load of construction materials, had skidded and lost control on the wet road, according to eyewitnesses.
“I’ve seen many accidents here, but this one was bad,” said Joe, a local shopkeeper who’s been serving Lija residents for decades. “The roundabout needs some TLC. It’s high time they did something about it.”
Resurfacing: A Long-Awaited Fix
The crash has expedited plans to resurface part of the roundabout, an issue that’s been on the radar of Lija Local Council for some time. The council, in collaboration with the Transport Malta, has announced that work will begin this week, with the resurfacing expected to be completed within two weeks.
“This incident has brought to the fore the need for urgent action,” said Lija Mayor, Mario Portelli. “We’ve been pushing for this resurfacing for a while now. The roundabout takes a lot of traffic, and the surface has deteriorated over time. We’re glad that this incident has finally pushed it up the priority list.”
The resurfacing work will focus on the section of the roundabout where the crash occurred, as well as other worn-out areas. The council has assured residents that the work will be carried out during off-peak hours to minimize traffic disruption.
: Safer Roads for Lija
While the resurfacing work is a step in the right direction, some residents are calling for more to be done to improve road safety in Lija. This includes better signage, improved lighting, and even traffic calming measures.
“We welcome the resurfacing, but it’s not enough,” said Anna, a mother of two who lives near the roundabout. “We need to do more to make our roads safer, especially for our children.”
As the cleanup operation continues and the resurfacing work begins, Lija residents are hoping that this incident serves as a catalyst for more improvements in their community. The roundabout, a busy intersection that connects Lija to other towns like Birkirkara and Msida, is more than just a junction; it’s a gateway to Lija, and its residents are eager to see it improved.
