Lija Roundabout Resurfacing: What You Need to Know

Truck Crash Spurs Lija Roundabout Resurfacing

Early this morning, a truck carrying a heavy load lost control on the Lija roundabout, causing significant damage to the road surface. The incident, which fortunately resulted in no major injuries, has led to the decision to resurface part of the roundabout. But what does this mean for Lija residents and commuters?

Roundabout Closure and Detours

The Lija roundabout will be partially closed from Monday, 12th April, for an estimated two weeks. The resurfacing work will take place in phases to minimize disruption. Commuters are advised to use alternative routes, such as the Triq il-Kbira through Birkirkara or the Marsa bypass. Signs will be placed along these routes to guide drivers.

For local residents, especially those living near the roundabout, the closure may cause some inconvenience. However, the Lija Local Council assures that access to homes will be maintained throughout the works. The council also encourages residents to use public transport during this period, with increased bus services planned along the alternative routes.

Improving Safety and Traffic Flow

The resurfacing work is not just about fixing the damage caused by the truck crash. It’s also an opportunity to improve the roundabout’s safety and traffic flow. The new surface will have improved skid resistance, reducing the risk of accidents, especially in wet weather. Additionally, the works will include the repainting of lane markings and the installation of new road signs to enhance clarity and reduce confusion among drivers.

Councillor for Infrastructure, Joseph Vella, commented, “This resurfacing project is long overdue. The truck crash was a wake-up call, but it’s also an opportunity to make our roundabout safer and more efficient for everyone who uses it.”

What to Expect During the Works

During the resurfacing works, traffic will be reduced to a single lane in the affected areas. Drivers are advised to expect delays and to allow extra time for their journeys. The works will take place between 7 am and 5 pm, with no work on weekends. Night works may be considered if necessary to speed up the process.

The Lija Local Council and the Infrastructure Ministry urge patience and understanding from residents and commuters during this period. They assure that the works are being carried out as quickly and efficiently as possible to minimize disruption.
