Lija Roundabout Resurfacing: What’s Next?

Lija Roundabout Resurfacing: What You Need to Know

Early this morning, the usually bustling Lija roundabout was a scene of chaos as a heavy truck jackknifed, sending sparks flying and causing significant damage to the road surface. The incident, which fortunately resulted in no serious injuries, has led to the Malta Transport Authority announcing plans to resurface part of the roundabout.

What Happened at the Lija Roundabout?

The truck, carrying a full load of construction materials, lost control while negotiating the roundabout near St. Mary’s Church. Witnesses reported that the truck’s trailer began to swing wildly before tipping over, spilling its contents across the road. The incident caused significant traffic delays, with commuters facing long queues along Triq San Pawl and Triq l-Imqades.

Resurfacing Plans Unveiled

In response to the incident, the Malta Transport Authority has revealed plans to resurface a section of the Lija roundabout. The works, set to commence next week, will focus on the area most affected by the truck’s trailer. The Authority assures residents and commuters that every effort will be made to minimize disruption during the works.

“We understand the inconvenience caused by this incident and the upcoming resurfacing works,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Transport Authority. “We urge road users to exercise patience and plan their journeys accordingly during this time.”

Safety Concerns and Future Improvements

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of the Lija roundabout, with some residents calling for improvements. Local councillor, Joseph Borg, has echoed these concerns, stating, “We’ve been pushing for improvements to this roundabout for some time. We need to ensure that our roads are safe for all users, especially with the increase in heavy traffic.”

In the meantime, the Malta Police have reminded truck drivers of to speed limits and taking extra care when navigating roundabouts. They also urged other road users to remain vigilant and report any unsafe driving practices.

As the resurfacing works get underway, Hot Malta will continue to keep you updated on the progress and any changes to traffic arrangements. Stay tuned for more updates.
