Yesterday afternoon, the peaceful residential street of Triq il-Kbira in Msida was shattered by a harrowing incident. A four-year-old boy, let’s call him Timmy to protect his identity, fell into the family swimming pool and was found unconscious by his parents. He is currently in critical condition at Mater Dei Hospital, fighting for his life.

The Accident

The incident occurred around 3 PM when Timmy’s parents were in the house, preparing lunch. The pool, a common sight in many Maltese homes, was just a few steps away from their kitchen window. In a matter of minutes, their world turned upside down.

“We heard a splash and rushed out. It was Timmy. He was face down in the pool,” his distraught father, Mr. Camilleri, told Hot Malta. “I dived in, pulled him out, and started CPR. My wife called the emergency services.”

CPR: A Lifesaver in the Making

CPR, or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, is a technique that can save lives in such emergencies. Mr. Camilleri’s quick thinking and action might just be the difference between life and death for his son.

Dr. Joseph Cuschieri, a local GP and CPR instructor, urges all parents to learn this life-saving skill. “CPR can double or even triple a child’s chance of survival,” he says. “It’s not difficult to learn. The Red Cross and other organizations offer courses regularly.”

Pool Safety in Malta

Malta’s warm climate means swimming pools are a common feature in many homes. However, they also pose a significant risk, especially to young children. According to the Maltese Association of Paediatricians, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children worldwide.

Hot Malta spoke to Ms. Maria Attard, a swimming instructor who has been teaching children for over a decade. “Parents need to be vigilant,” she says. “Never leave a child unattended near a pool. Install safety barriers, and teach your children to swim as early as possible.”

Timmy’s accident has through the close-knit Msida community. Neighbors have been rallying around the Camilleri family, offering support and prayers. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with Timmy’s medical expenses.

As we await updates on Timmy’s condition, let’s remember the power of CPR and the importance of pool safety. Let’s also keep the Camilleri family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

“We’re just hoping for a miracle,” Mr. Camilleri told Hot Malta. “Please, if you have a pool, be careful. It can happen to anyone.”
