Emergency services rush to the scene of a pool accident in Msida.

In the quiet residential area of Msida, a family’s worst nightmare unfolded yesterday afternoon. A four-year-old boy, identified only as Matthew, slipped away from his parents’ watchful eyes and tumbled into their neighbour’s swimming pool. The boy, now fighting for his life at Mater Dei Hospital, is in critical condition.

Emergency Response

The drama unfolded at around 3 pm on a seemingly ordinary Tuesday. Neighbours heard the boy’s mother scream and rushed to find her pulling her son out of the water. They immediately called for an ambulance, and emergency services responded swiftly, with a police patrol and an ambulance arriving within minutes.

Paramedics performed CPR at the scene before rushing the boy to the hospital. Dr. Martin Fenech, a spokesperson for the Malta Medical Association, praised the quick response of the emergency services, stating, “Every second counts in such cases, and their swift action has given the boy the best possible chance.”

Pool Safety in Malta

This incident has once again highlighted the importance of pool safety, especially during the summer months when many Maltese families have access to private pools. According to the Malta Resuscitation Council, drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in children under five.

Hot Malta spoke to pool safety expert, Joe Borg, who stressed the importance of constant supervision and safety measures. “Always keep an eye on children around water. Install barriers, alarms, and ensure children know how to swim. It could save a life,” he said.

Community Support

The Msida community has rallied around Matthew and his family, with neighbours and friends offering support and prayers. A spokesperson for the family thanked the community for their outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.

Matthew’s condition remains critical, and the family has asked for privacy as they wait for updates from doctors. Hot Malta will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.

In the meantime, let’s remember Matthew in our thoughts and prayers, and let this serve as a stark reminder of the importance of pool safety.
