Malta Boy, 4, Fights for Life After Pool Accident
Tragic Accident: Four-year-old Boy Fighting for Life After Pool Fall
Emergency services rushed to a quiet residential street in Birkirkara yesterday afternoon, where a four-year-old boy was found unconscious in a swimming pool. The toddler, identified as little Matthew, was immediately airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital in critical condition, where he remains in the intensive care unit.
What Happened?
The incident occurred at around 3 PM at a private residence on Triq San Gorg, Birkirkara. Neighbors reported hearing cries for help before seeing Matthew’s distraught parents performing CPR on their son by the poolside. The boy had apparently slipped away from his parents’ watch and fallen into the deep end of the pool.
“It all happened so quickly,” said a shaken neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. “One moment, we heard the children playing, and the next, we saw the parents rushing to the pool, screaming for help.”
Community in Shock
News of the accident through the close-knit community of Birkirkara. Residents gathered outside the family’s home last night, lighting candles and leaving messages of support for the grieving parents. A makeshift shrine of teddy bears and flowers has since been set up at the entrance of the street.
“This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” said another neighbor, a mother of two. “Our hearts go out to Matthew’s parents. We’re praying for a miracle.”
Pool Safety in Malta
This tragic incident has once again brought the issue of pool safety to the forefront. According to the Malta Resuscitation Council, drowning is a leading cause of accidental death among children in Malta. In response to this alarming statistic, the council has been campaigning for stricter pool safety regulations and increased public awareness.
“We urge all pool owners to install safety barriers and alarms,” said Dr. Joseph Cuschieri, chairman of the Malta Resuscitation Council. “But more importantly, we need to educate parents and children about water safety. Always keep an eye on your children around water, and teach them to swim as early as possible.”
The family has requested privacy during this difficult time. Hot Malta will continue to update readers on Matthew’s condition as more information becomes available.
