Malta Celebrates Sir David Attenborough’s 100 Years

Malta’s Wildlife Enthusiasts Gear Up for Centenary Celebration of Sir David Attenborough

Imagine standing on the rugged cliffs of Dingli, the highest point on the Maltese Islands, gazing out at the vast Mediterranean Sea. Now, picture Sir David Attenborough, the legendary naturalist, standing right beside you, his eyes reflecting the same awe and wonder at the beauty of our planet. This could almost be a scene from one of his iconic documentaries, but it’s about to become a reality, albeit in spirit, as Malta prepares to celebrate Sir David’s 100th birthday.

A Global Celebration Comes to Malta

Sir David Attenborough, the man who has brought the wonders of the natural world into our living rooms for over six decades, turns 100 on May 8th, 2022. To mark this extraordinary milestone, a global fundraising event, ‘The Big Birthday Bash’, is being organized, with Malta taking center stage as one of the key participating locations.

Locally, the event is being coordinated by the Malta-based NGO, Nature Trust – Fetha, in collaboration with the Global Fundraising Team. They aim to celebrate Sir David’s incredible life and work while raising funds for vital conservation projects worldwide.

Malta’s Part in the Global Celebration

Malta’s celebration will take place on Saturday, May 7th, at the beautiful San Anton Palace Gardens in Attard. The event, titled ‘A Night for Nature: Malta Celebrates Sir David Attenborough’, promises to be a memorable evening filled with entertainment, education, and inspiration.

The event will feature a screening of a special birthday message from Sir David himself, along with exclusive footage from his upcoming documentary series. Local musicians and performers will also take to the stage, including the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and popular Maltese singer, Ivan Filletti.

But it’s not just about the celebration. The event is also a call to action. Funds raised will go towards Nature Trust – Fetha’s ongoing projects to protect and restore Malta’s unique biodiversity, as well as global conservation initiatives supported by the Global Fundraising Team.

As Malta’s Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning, Aaron Farrugia, puts it, “This event is a fantastic opportunity for us to not only celebrate Sir David’s incredible career but also to highlight the importance of our own environmental efforts here in Malta.”

How You Can Get Involved

Tickets for ‘A Night for Nature: Malta Celebrates Sir David Attenborough’ are available online at Nature Trust – Fetha’s website. The event is open to all ages, with children under 12 enjoying free entry.

If you can’t make it to the event but still want to show your support, you can make a donation to Nature Trust – Fetha or the Global Fundraising Team. Every contribution, no matter how small, will help make a real difference in protecting our planet’s precious wildlife and habitats.

So, mark your calendars, spread the word, and let’s come together to celebrate the man who has inspired generations to care for our natural world. As Sir David himself says, “It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.”
