Malta Celebrates Sir David Attenborough’s 100 Years

Blowing Out 100 Candles for Sir David: Malta’s Attenborough Celebration

Imagine, if you will, the grand ballroom of the Phoenicia Hotel in Floriana, Malta, filled with the hum of excited chatter. The air is thick with anticipation, not just for the sumptuous feast that’s about to be served, but for the man of the hour – Sir David Attenborough. Well, his 100th birthday, that is. Because even though the good knight himself won’t be there in person, his spirit is very much present at this unique fundraising event.

Why Malta Loves Attenborough

Malta, an island nation known for its rich history and stunning landscapes, has always had a soft spot for the natural world. And who better to celebrate our blue planet than the man who’s brought it into our living rooms for decades? From the rugged cliffs of Dingli to the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Lagoon, Malta’s natural beauty is no stranger to Sir David’s lens. So, it’s no surprise that the Malta-based charity, Wirt iż-Żejtun, is leading the charge to honour his extraordinary career.

An Evening with Sir David (in spirit)

Picture this: a three-course meal, complete with fine wine and even finer company. But the real star of the show is the screening of a never-before-seen interview with Sir David himself. Conducted exclusively for this event, the interview promises to offer a rare glimpse into the mind of the man who’s brought us face-to-face with the wonders of the natural world.

But this isn’t just a night of celebration. It’s a fundraising event with a purpose. Proceeds will go towards supporting Wirt iż-Żejtun’s environmental initiatives, including their work to protect and restore Malta’s unique biodiversity. Because, as Sir David himself has said, “It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.”

How to Be Part of the Celebration

So, if you’re in Malta and you want to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime event, here’s what you need to know. The fundraising dinner will take place on Saturday, 8th May at the Phoenicia Hotel. Tickets are €100 each, and you can purchase them online through Wirt iż-Żejtun’s website. But hurry, spaces are limited!

And if you can’t make it but still want to show your support, you can donate to Wirt iż-Żejtun’s cause via their website. Every little bit helps in preserving the natural world that Sir David has dedicated his life to documenting.

As for the future, well, let’s hope that Sir David’s 101st birthday is just as celebrated. After all, there’s still so much of our beautiful planet left to explore.

“We are not going to be able to operate our Spaceship Earth successfully nor for much longer unless we see it as a whole spaceship and our fate as common. It has to be done, but it has to be done with a vision.” – Sir David Attenborough
