Malta Celebrates Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday
Malta’s Nature Lovers Gear Up for a Centenary Celebration
Imagine standing on the cliffs of Dingli, the wind whipping your hair, as you gaze out at the vast, untamed Mediterranean. Now, picture Sir David Attenborough, the man who’s brought us closer to such wild beauty than ever before, turning 100. That’s the spirit behind ‘A Night for Attenborough’, a fundraising event happening right here in Malta.
Honouring a Lifetime of Exploration
Sir David Attenborough has spent a century exploring our planet, from the deepest oceans to the highest mountains. He’s introduced us to creatures we never knew existed and shown us the delicate balance of our ecosystems. Now, it’s our turn to celebrate him. ‘A Night for Attenborough’ is more than just a birthday party; it’s a tribute to a life dedicated to understanding and preserving our natural world.
Organised by the Malta-based NGO, Nature Trust, the event will take place on the 8th of May at the historic Fort St. Elmo in Valletta. The fort, a symbol of Malta’s resilience, will serve as a fitting backdrop for an evening dedicated to the resilience and wonder of nature.
An Evening of Celebration and Conservation
The evening will kick off with a screening of one of Sir David’s most iconic documentaries, followed by a panel discussion with local environmental experts. Guests will enjoy local cuisine, with a focus on sustainable and seasonal ingredients, and can bid on unique auction items, including a private boat tour of Comino’s Blue Lagoon.
But ‘A Night for Attenborough’ is more than just a celebration. It’s a call to action. Proceeds from the event will go towards Nature Trust’s ongoing projects, including the restoration of Malta’s native vegetation and the protection of endangered species like the Maltese wall lizard.
“We want to honour Sir David’s legacy by doing what he’s always done – raising awareness and inspiring action,” says Mark Sultana, Nature Trust’s director. “We hope that by coming together to celebrate his centenary, we can also make a real difference for Malta’s own wildlife.”
