Malta Cheers as Finland & Israel Advance in Eurovision
Eurovision Fever Hits Malta: Finland and Israel Sail Through Semis
As the sun set over the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, Malta’s Eurovision enthusiasts were glued to their screens, cheering on their favourites in the first semi-final. The annual musical extravaganza might be happening in Turin, Italy, but the spirit of Eurovision is alive and kicking in Malta.
Finland’s Rockstar and Israel’s Power Ballad Advance
Finland’s rockstar, Blind Channel, and Israel’s power balladeer, Efrat Gosh, emerged victorious from the first semi-final, securing their spots in the grand final. Malta’s Eurovision fans, known for their passionate support, were thrilled with the results. “I’ve been waiting all year for this!” exclaimed Maria, a Malta-based Eurovision enthusiast, as she watched the results roll in.
Blind Channel’s hard-hitting rock anthem, “Dark Side,” resonated with audiences, while Efrat Gosh’s emotional ballad, “The Same Heart,” brought the house down. Both acts will now compete in the grand final, set to take place this Saturday in Turin.
Malta’s Eurovision History and Local Favourites
Malta, a small island nation, has punched above its weight at Eurovision, qualifying for the final an impressive 12 times since its debut in 1971. This year, Malta is represented by Destiny, a powerhouse vocalist who won the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with her powerful ballad, “Je Me Casse.” Destiny’s journey to Turin has captivated Maltese audiences, with many hoping she’ll bring the Eurovision trophy home.
But Malta’s Eurovision love doesn’t stop at Destiny. Local fans are also rooting for other favourites, including Switzerland’s Gjon’s Tears, who won the hearts of Maltese audiences last year with his emotional performance of “Tout l’Univers.” This year, he’s back with “Tout l’Univers (Reprise),” a stripped-back version of his 2021 hit. “I’m really hoping Gjon’s Tears makes it to the final,” said Tony, a Malta-based Eurovision enthusiast. “His voice is just incredible.”
Eurovision Parties and Local Traditions
Eurovision is more than just a song contest in Malta; it’s a social event. From Valletta to Bugibba, parties are being thrown to celebrate the occasion. The popular bar, Cheers Pub in Paceville, is hosting a Eurovision-themed party every night of the contest, with live performances and giveaways. “Eurovision is about more than the music,” said the bar’s owner, Joe. “It’s about bringing people together and having a good time.”
Malta’s Eurovision fever is also reflected in local traditions. Every year, the Malta Eurovision Song Contest is held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, attracting thousands of fans. The event is a celebration of local talent and a chance for Maltese audiences to get a sneak peek of the international acts they’ll be cheering on in the months to come.
