Malta: Four-Year-Old Boy Fights for Life After Pool Incident
Tragedy at the Pool: Four-year-old Boy in Critical Condition
Emergency services rushed to a residential street in Birkirkara today, where a four-year-old boy was found unconscious in his family’s swimming pool. The toddler, identified only as Matthew, was airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital in critical condition, leaving the close-knit community in shock.
Scene at the Pool
Neighbors described the scene as chaotic, with frantic calls for help echoing through the usually peaceful street. “I heard a woman screaming, ‘My son, my son!’ It was heart-wrenching,” said Maria, a resident who wished to remain anonymous. The boy’s father, visibly distraught, was seen performing CPR until paramedics arrived.
Police and Civil Protection Department officials quickly cordoned off the area around the house on Triq il-Kbira, as investigators began their probe into the incident. The family’s private swimming pool, a common feature in many Maltese homes, was the grim focal point.
Community in Shock
Birkirkara, a town known for its vibrant community spirit, was left reeling by the news. “This is every parent’s nightmare,” said a local shopkeeper, shaking his head. “We’re all praying for little Matthew and his family.” Flowers and teddy bears began to appear at the family’s gate, a makeshift shrine of support.
Local councillor, Joe Borg, expressed his condolences and urged residents to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them. We’re a tight-knit community, and we’ll do everything we can to support them,” he said.
Pool Safety in Malta
While swimming pools are a common feature in Malta, especially during the hot summer months, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers. According to the Malta Resuscitation Council, drowning is a leading cause of accidental death among children under five.
“It takes just a few seconds for a child to slip under the water unnoticed,” said Dr. Joseph Cuschieri, a spokesperson for the council. “We urge all pool owners to install safety barriers, keep pools covered when not in use, and always supervise children around water.”
In light of this tragedy, many local residents have started a petition calling for stricter pool safety regulations. “We can’t bring Matthew’s smile back, but we can fight to prevent this from happening to another family,” said the petition’s initiator, Lisa Camilleri.
Matthew’s Fight
As of press time, Matthew remains in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit at Mater Dei. Medical staff describe his condition as stable but serious. “We’re doing everything we can to support little Matthew and his family during this challenging time,” said a hospital spokesperson.
Throughout the day, well-wishers gathered outside the hospital, holding candles and offering prayers for the young boy’s recovery. A fundraising campaign has also been launched to support the family during this difficult period.
