Malta’s 2022 Election: Meet the Candidates

Election Desk: The cast is complete – Malta’s political stage set for 2022

As the sun sets over the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, the political scene of Malta is cast in a new light. The cast for the 2022 general election is complete, with party leaders having announced their candidates for all 13 constituencies. But who are the new faces, and what do they bring to the table?

New blood in the Labour Party

The ruling Labour Party (PL) has fielded a mix of old and new, with a significant number of fresh faces among their candidates. Among them is Dr. Aaron Farrugia, a 32-year-old doctor who will be contesting in the 12th District, which includes the bustling streets of Birkirkara. A relative newcomer to politics, Dr. Farrugia brings a youthful energy and a focus on healthcare to the PL’s lineup.

Another notable addition is Dr. Clifton Grima, a 37-year-old lawyer who will be contesting in the 11th District, which includes the historic city of Mdina. With a strong background in human rights and a passion for social justice, Dr. Grima is expected to bring a progressive voice to the PL’s ranks.

PN’s experienced lineup

The Nationalist Party (PN) has opted for a more experienced lineup, with many of their candidates having contested in previous elections. Among them is Dr. David Agius, a 55-year-old lawyer who will be contesting in the 13th District, which includes the coastal town of Marsascala. A veteran of Maltese politics, Dr. Agius brings a wealth of experience to the PN’s team.

Another experienced candidate is Dr. Therese Comodini Cachia, a 54-year-old lawyer who will be contesting in the 10th District, which includes the picturesque town of Rabat. A former Minister of Justice, Dr. Comodini Cachia is expected to provide strong leadership and a deep understanding of the political scene to the PN’s lineup.

Third parties and independents

Beyond the two major parties, several third parties and independent candidates have also thrown their hats into the ring. Among them is Dr. Arnold Cassola, a 65-year-old environmentalist who will be contesting as an independent in the 11th District. A long-time advocate for environmental causes, Dr. Cassola brings a unique perspective to the election.

Another independent candidate is Dr. Godfrey Farrugia, a 57-year-old doctor who will be contesting in the 12th District. A former PL MP, Dr. Farrugia is running as an independent on a platform focused on healthcare and social justice.

As the election approaches, the streets of Malta’s 13 constituencies will be filled with the sounds of campaigning, the sight of posters, and the energy of a nation preparing to choose its next government. The cast is complete, and the stage is set for a lively and engaging political drama.

But who will take the lead in this drama? Who will write the next chapter in Malta’s political history? . So, Malta, are you ready for your close-up?
