Malta’s 2023 Election: Meet the Candidates
Election Desk: The cast is complete – Meet Malta’s 2023 electoral hopefuls
As the sun sets on Triq il-Kbira in Rabat, the historic street buzzes with a different energy. It’s not just the usual chatter of tourists or the aroma of traditional Maltese food wafting from nearby restaurants. It’s the hum of political activity, as the island’s political parties have officially announced their candidates for the 2023 general election.
Labour’s Lineup: Familiar Faces and Fresh Blood
The ruling Labour Party kicked off the electoral season with a bang, unveiling a list that blends experience with youth. Prime Minister Robert Abela leads the pack, seeking a full term after taking over from his predecessor, Joseph Muscat, mid-mandate. Among the familiar faces are Finance Minister Clyde Caruana and Education Minister Justyne Caruana, both seeking re-election in their respective districts.
But it’s the fresh faces that have grabbed headlines. Among them is 27-year-old Clayton Bartolo, who will be contesting in the third district. A lawyer by profession, Bartolo is part of a new generation of Labour candidates who hope to bring a youthful perspective to Parliament.
PN’s Slate: A Mix of Experience and Renewal
Opposition leader Bernard Grech has unveiled a Nationalist Party (PN) slate that promises a mix of experience and renewal. Grech himself leads the charge, seeking to unseat the Labour Party after nine years in opposition. Among the experienced hands are former ministers Beppe Fenech Adami and David Agius, both seeking re-election.
But the PN has also fielded several new candidates, including lawyer and former journalist Alex Muscat, who will be contesting in the sixth district. Muscat, a relative newcomer to politics, brings a fresh perspective to the PN’s electoral lineup.
Third Force: New Faces and Familiar Names
The electoral scene is not limited to the two traditional parties. The new political party, Imperium Europa, has also announced its candidates. Led by former PN MP and MEP David Casa, Imperium Europa promises to offer voters a genuine alternative. Among its candidates are several new faces, as well as some familiar names, including former Labour MP and MEP Marlene Farrugia.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party, led by former PN minister Godfrey Farrugia, has also announced its candidates. The party, which has struggled to make an impact in recent elections, is hoping to build on its 2019 European election success, when it won a seat in the European Parliament.
What Lies Ahead?
The official campaign period may not start until next month, but the race for Malta’s 67 parliamentary seats is already well and truly underway. With a mix of familiar faces and fresh blood, the 2023 election promises to be a closely fought contest. As the candidates hit the streets, one thing is clear: the Maltese people will have a real choice to make come March.
“This election is about the future of our country,” says PN leader Bernard Grech. “It’s about the kind of Malta we want to build for our children and our grandchildren.”
With the cast now complete, all eyes are on the stage. The curtain may not rise until March, but the anticipation is already building. Who will take the lead? Who will support them? And, perhaps most importantly, who will the Maltese people choose to represent them in Parliament?
