Malta’s 2023 Election: Meet the Political Hopefuls

Election Desk: The cast is complete – Meet Malta’s 2023 political hopefuls

As the sun sets over the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, the political stage for Malta’s 2023 general election is set. The cast is complete, with party leaders having finalised their candidate lists. But who are the faces vying for your vote? Let’s meet the hopefuls.

Labour’s Lineup: Familiar Faces and Fresh Blood

The ruling Labour Party (PL) has fielded 55 candidates, a mix of seasoned politicians and fresh faces. Prime Minister Robert Abela leads the pack, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chris Cardona and Minister of Education Justyne Caruana among the prominent names. But there are new additions too, like former journalist and now candidate for Ħamrun, Clint Camilleri.

“I’ve always been passionate about Ħamrun,” says Clint, sipping coffee at a bustling street café on Triq San Girgor. “I want to give back to my community and help shape its future.”

PN’s Roster: A Blend of Experience and Youth

The Nationalist Party (PN) has put forward 54 candidates, led by party leader Bernard Grech. The list includes veteran politicians like former Prime Minister Simon Busuttil and former Opposition Leader Lawrence Gonzi, as well as younger faces like 26-year-old candidate for Msida, Alex Perici Calascione.

“I’m eager to bring a new perspective to politics,” says Alex, sitting in the shade of a banyan tree at Msida Bastion Square. “I want to represent the voice of my generation.”

Third Force: New Faces and Familiar Names

The third force in Maltese politics, the Progressive Party (PP), has fielded 16 candidates. Led by former PN MP and now party leader Arnold Cassola, the list includes a mix of new faces and familiar names, like former PN MP and now candidate for Birkirkara, Frank Tanti.

“I believe in Arnold’s vision for a progressive Malta,” says Frank, walking along Birkirkara’s bustling Republic Street. “I’m excited to be part of this new political force.”

Election Issues: What’s on the Table?

With the cast set, the focus now shifts to the issues. From housing and the economy to education and the environment, the candidates will be debating the issues that matter most to Malta’s voters. But with the election still months away, one thing is certain – the political drama in Malta is just getting started.

“Malta’s future depends on your vote,” says Prime Minister Abela, as he campaigns in his home town of Żurrieq. “Let’s build a better Malta together.”

As the sun rises over the Maltese islands, the political stage is set. The cast is complete, and the curtain is about to rise on Malta’s 2023 general election.
