Malta’s Morning Gridlock: Three Accidents Snarl Roads

Gridlock Alert: Three Accidents Snarl Maltese Roads

It’s 8:30 AM, and the sun is barely up, but the roads in and around Malta are already a mess. Three accidents, all within an hour, have left motorists fuming and commuters late for work. The first, a fender-bender on the Triq San Ġwann, has traffic backed up all the way to the Birkirkara roundabout. The second, a more serious collision on the Marsa bypass, has the police diverting traffic onto the old road. And the cherry on top? A lorry jack-knifed on the Mġarr Hill, causing a massive tailback heading towards Gozo.

Transport Malta Issues Warning

Transport Malta has issued a stark warning following these incidents. “Expect heavy delays and plan your journeys accordingly,” their tweet reads. They’ve also advised motorists to use public transport where possible, a sentiment echoed by the Malta Public Transport Facebook page. But with buses packed to the brim and many routes already delayed, it’s not an easy fix.

What’s Causing the Chaos?

So, what’s behind this morning’s traffic nightmare? Weather conditions are fair, no major roadworks are planned, and it’s not a public holiday. According to Inspector Ian Abela of the Malta Police, it’s a combination of factors. “We’ve seen an increase in traffic due to the post-lockdown commute,” he says. “Add to that some reckless driving and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.”

Data from the Malta Road Safety Observatory supports this. They’ve seen a 15% increase in traffic accidents since restrictions were lifted. And with summer just around the corner, tourist traffic is set to add to the mix.

What Can We Do?

With no quick fixes in sight, it’s up to us, the drivers, to make a difference. “Slow down, keep your distance, and stay alert,” advises Inspector Abela. “And if you can, leave your car at home.”

But what if we can’t? What if we’re stuck in this gridlock day after day? It’s time we start demanding better. Better roads, better public transport, and better driver education. It’s time we start treating our roads with the respect they deserve.

As we navigate this morning’s chaos, let’s remember, it’s not just about getting from A to B. It’s about getting there safely. And it’s about time we started acting like it.
