Man’s Obsession: 15,000 Messages Land Him on Probation
Stalked by a Storm of Messages: Man’s Obsession Lands Him on Probation
Imagine this: your phone buzzes non-stop, day and night. Notifications flood in, each one a message from an ex-partner who just won’t let go. This was the reality for a local woman, until the courts intervened. A man from Msida has been handed a probation order after bombarding his former partner with thousands of messages.
From Love to Obsession: A Tale of Two Sides
The court heard how the man, in his late twenties, had become obsessed with his ex-girlfriend after their relationship ended. He sent her an astonishing 15,000 messages in just six months, many of them abusive and threatening. The woman, a local nurse, told the court she was terrified and had to change her phone number multiple times to escape the relentless onslaught.
The man, however, painted a different picture. He claimed he was simply trying to win her back, and that his messages were a cry for help. He admitted to sending the messages but denied any criminal intent. The court, however, saw it differently.
Justice Served at the Law Courts in Valletta
The case was heard at the Law Courts in Valletta, where Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech handed down the probation order. The man was also ordered to undergo psychological treatment and to stay away from his former partner. If he breaches any of these conditions, he could face jail time.
Magistrate Frendo Dimech was clear in her ruling: “This behaviour is not acceptable in a civilised society. It’s important to send a strong message that such actions will not be tolerated.”
