Motorcyclist Injured in Gozo Collision: What We Know So Far

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a collision involving a motorcyclist on Gozo’s Victoria Road yesterday afternoon, leaving the rider with serious injuries. The incident, which occurred near the traffic lights at the roundabout leading to the Gozo General Hospital, has once again highlighted the need for road safety awareness on the sister island.

What Happened?

The collision, involving a motorcycle and a car, took place around 3:30 PM. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the motorcyclist, a local man in his 30s, lying on the road with visible injuries. The driver of the car, a woman in her 50s, was reportedly shaken but unharmed.

Paramedics from the Gozo Civil Protection Department and the Red Cross quickly arrived at the scene, providing immediate medical assistance to the injured motorcyclist. He was then transported to the Gozo General Hospital for further treatment. The extent of his injuries is not yet known, but they are believed to be serious.

Traffic Disruptions and Investigation

The collision caused significant traffic disruptions in the area, with police closing off the road for several hours to allow for investigation and clearance of the scene. Traffic was diverted through side streets, leading to congestion in the area.

The Gozo Police, assisted by the Forensic Unit, are currently investigating the cause of the collision. They have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information to come forward and assist with their inquiries.

Road Safety in Gozo

This latest incident has once again brought into focus the issue of road safety in Gozo. The island’s narrow roads and heavy traffic, particularly during peak hours, often lead to dangerous driving conditions. According to statistics from the Malta Police, there were 149 road traffic accidents in Gozo in 2020, resulting in 216 casualties.

Local residents and road safety advocates have long called for improved road infrastructure and stricter enforcement of traffic laws. Some have suggested the implementation of speed cameras and the introduction of a lower speed limit in urban areas.

In response to these concerns, the Ministry for Gozo has announced plans to invest in road safety measures, including the installation of more traffic calming measures and the improvement of road signage. However, these plans are still in the early stages, and when and how they will be implemented.

In the meantime, the community is urged to remain vigilant and to adhere to road safety guidelines. Motorcyclists, in particular, are reminded to wear protective gear and to follow all traffic rules to minimize the risk of accidents.
