Motorcyclist Injured in Gozo Collision: What We Know So Far

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a collision involving a motorcycle and a car on the picturesque Gozo countryside, leaving the motorcyclist with serious injuries. The incident occurred on the Triq l-Imqabba, a winding road known for its scenic views of the Mediterranean, around 3 pm yesterday.

Injuries and Rescue Operation

The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man from Xewkija, was found lying on the road with serious injuries to his legs and head. Eyewitnesses reported seeing him in a critical condition, with blood visible on the tarmac. The driver of the car, a 55-year-old woman from Għajnsielem, was unharmed.

Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department and the Gozo Regional Operations Centre arrived at the scene within minutes. They stabilised the injured motorcyclist and airlifted him to Mater Dei Hospital in Malta for further treatment. His condition is currently described as stable but critical.

Road Closure and Traffic Disruption

The collision caused significant traffic disruption, with the Triq l-Imqabba closed for several hours while police investigated the incident. Diversions were put in place, leading to heavy traffic in the surrounding areas, including the villages of Xagħra and Victoria.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to come forward. They are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen the motorcycle or car before the collision.

Safety Concerns and Prevention

This incident has once again raised concerns about road safety in Gozo, with local residents calling for improved road signs and increased traffic enforcement. The Gozo Regional Committee has been lobbying for better road infrastructure and stricter penalties for traffic offenses.

Malta’s Minister for Gozo, Clint Camilleri, has expressed his concern over the incident and has promised to work with local authorities to improve road safety. He said, “We need to do more to prevent these tragedies. It’s not just about infrastructure, but also about education and enforcement.”

In the meantime, motorists and cyclists are urged to exercise caution on Gozo’s roads, especially during peak tourist season when traffic can be heavier than usual.

Hot Malta will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available. Our thoughts are with the injured motorcyclist and his family at this difficult time.
