Ever wondered what happens to the stray cats and dogs that roam our streets? Many find their way to animal shelters, hoping for a second chance at a loving home. Now, there’s some pawsitive news for our furry friends. A new animal rehoming centre is set to open in Marsaxlokk, giving these animals a better shot at adoption.

The new centre, a joint venture between local NGO’s Malta Animal Welfare and Adopt a Dog Malta, aims to provide a temporary home for stray and abandoned animals. Their mission? To rehabilitate, vaccinate, and rehome as many animals as possible. “We want to give these animals a fighting chance,” says Maria, a spokesperson for the project. “A chance to be loved, to have a family, and to live a happy life.”

Why Marsaxlokk? The fishing village, known for its vibrant Sunday market and fresh seafood, offers a peaceful and spacious environment for the animals. The centre will be situated near the Marsaxlokk Industrial Estate, providing easy access for potential adopters and volunteers. “Marsaxlokk is the perfect balance between rural and urban,” explains Maria. “It’s close enough to the city for people to visit, but far enough to provide a calm and stress-free environment for the animals.”

The centre won’t just be a place for animals to wait for adoption. It will also serve as a hub for animal welfare initiatives. There are plans for a dog park, a cat play area, and even a community garden. “We want this to be a place where people can come, walk their dogs, and maybe even adopt a new furry friend,” says Maria. The centre will also offer educational workshops, teaching children and adults about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.

But the centre can’t do it alone. It’s calling on the public for help. “We need volunteers, donations, and adopters,” says Maria. “Every little bit helps. Whether it’s a few hours of your time, some old blankets, or a new home for one of our animals, it all makes a difference.”
