Mega Development in Nigret: ‘Vote Owen, Get George’ – NGO Raises Concerns
Imagine standing at the bustling corner of Triq San Pawl and Triq il-Kbira in Nigret, Birkirkara. The scent of fresh bread from the nearby bakery fills the air, and the chatter of locals going about their day creates a symphony of everyday life. Now, picture this scene replaced by towering buildings, traffic congestion, and a shadow cast over the historic parish church. This is the reality that an NGO fears could become a reality if the Nigret mega development project goes ahead as planned.
Owen’s Promise, George’s Reality?
During the 2019 local council elections, Owen Bonnici, now Birkirkara’s mayor, promised to prioritize the interests of the community. His campaign slogan, ‘Vote Owen, Get George’, was a nod to the popular local character, George, who embodies the spirit of Birkirkara. However, an NGO has raised concerns that the Nigret mega development project, approved by the Planning Authority during Bonnici’s tenure, goes against this promise.
The project, proposed by the Birkirkara Local Council, includes the construction of two 16-story towers and a 12-story tower, totaling over 300 residential units and commercial spaces. While the council argues that the project will bring economic growth and increased revenue, the NGO contends that it will lead to overcrowding, traffic congestion, and an overshadowing of the historic church.
NGO’s Concerns and the Public Consultation
The NGO, which wishes to remain anonymous to avoid retribution, has submitted a detailed objection to the Planning Authority. Their main concerns include:
- The project’s scale, which they argue is out of proportion with the surrounding area.
- The potential increase in traffic, which could lead to congestion and parking issues.
- The overshadowing of the historic St. Helen’s Church, which could affect its lighting and ambiance.
- The lack of consultation with the public, with the NGO arguing that the project was pushed through without adequate consideration of residents’ opinions.
The NGO has called for a public consultation meeting to discuss the project’s implications and to give residents a chance to voice their concerns. They argue that such a meeting is necessary to ensure transparency and to respect the democratic process.
: The Fight for Nigret’s Future
As the Planning Authority considers the project, the NGO remains vigilant. They are determined to fight for what they believe is best for Nigret and Birkirkara. They urge residents to stay informed and to make their voices heard. “This is about more than just a few buildings,” says a spokesperson for the NGO. “It’s about the future of our community, our heritage, and our quality of life.”
Mayor Owen Bonnici has been approached for comment but has not yet responded. Hot Malta will continue to follow this story as it develops.
