PN Pledges to Reopen Birkirkara Police Station, Improve Salaries for Disciplined Forces

As you walk down the quiet streets of Birkirkara, the closed shutters of the once-buzzing police station serve as a stark reminder of a service that’s been missing from the community for years. But that could be set to change, as the Nationalist Party (PN) has pledged to reopen the station and improve salaries for Malta’s disciplined forces.

PN’s Election Pledge: Reinvigorating Local Security

The PN, led by Bernard Grech, has unveiled a series of electoral pledges aimed at bolstering Malta’s security and public safety. Among these is a commitment to reopen the Birkirkara police station, which was closed in 2017, and improve the salaries of Malta’s police force, Armed Forces of Malta, and Correctional Services.

Reopening Birkirkara Police Station: A Community Boost

For the residents of Birkirkara and surrounding areas, the closure of the police station has been a contentious issue. The station’s reopening, as pledged by the PN, is expected to provide a significant boost to community safety and peace of mind. “We’ve missed having a local police presence,” says Maria, a Birkirkara resident. “I hope this pledge comes to fruition.”

The PN’s proposal includes not just the reopening of the Birkirkara station, but also the establishment of new police stations in other towns across Malta. This, the party argues, will help decentralize policing and improve response times to emergencies.

Improving Salaries: Attracting and Retaining Talent

In addition to the reopening of police stations, the PN has also pledged to improve the salaries of Malta’s disciplined forces. The party aims to make these roles more attractive to potential recruits and to retain existing personnel. “We want to ensure that those who protect and serve our communities are properly compensated for their crucial work,” says Grech.

The PN’s proposal includes a review of salaries and benefits, with a view to bringing them in line with those offered in comparable roles within the public sector. The party also pledges to improve working conditions and provide better training opportunities for personnel.

Reacting to the PN’s pledges, Malta’s Police Association welcomed the proposals, stating that they “go a long way in addressing the concerns of our members.” However, the association also urged the party to provide more details on how these pledges would be funded and implemented.

: A Safer Malta

As Malta heads towards the next general election, the PN’s pledges on security and public safety are likely to feature prominently in the party’s campaign. For residents like Maria in Birkirkara, these pledges offer a glimmer of hope for a safer, more secure future. “I’ll be voting for the party that promises to keep our community safe,” she says.

As for the PN, the party is confident that its proposals will help to strengthen Malta’s security and public safety. “We believe that by investing in our disciplined forces and providing them with the tools they need to do their jobs effectively, we can make Malta a safer place for everyone,” says Grech.
