Qormi has topped the list for traffic accidents in the first three months of 2023, according to the Malta Police Force’s latest statistics.

By the Numbers: Qormi’s Road Safety Challenge

Between January and March, Qormi recorded a total of 125 traffic accidents, compared to 97 in Żabbar, the second-highest on the list. This places Qormi at the top, ahead of larger towns like Paola and Ħamrun. The numbers are a stark reminder that road safety is not just a national issue, but a pressing local concern.

Qormi’s Unique Road Layout: A Factor in Accidents?

Qormi, known for its rich history and traditional architecture, is characterized by its narrow streets and tight corners. While these features contribute to the town’s charm, they also present unique challenges for drivers. Navigating these roads requires extra caution, and even the slightest lapse in concentration can lead to an accident.

Take Triq it-Torri, for instance. This busy street, lined with shops and residences, is a hotspot for accidents. Its sharp bends and lack of pedestrian crossings make it a challenging route for both drivers and pedestrians.

Community Initiatives: Qormi’s Response to the Crisis

In response to this growing concern, local councils and community groups are stepping up their efforts to improve road safety. The Qormi Local Council, in collaboration with the Malta Police, has launched a series of initiatives aimed at raising awareness about road safety.
