Qormi’s Road Safety Concern: A Closer Look at the First Quarter’s Accident Figures

Picture this: the bustling streets of Qormi, Malta’s third-largest local council, a hive of activity with its unique blend of traditional and modern architecture. Now, imagine those same streets filled with the screeching of brakes, the crunch of metal, and the blare of car horns. This isn’t a scene from a Hollywood thriller, but a reality Qormi residents have been grappling with, as the first three months of 2023 saw the highest number of traffic accidents in the locality compared to other Maltese towns.

By the Numbers: Qormi’s Accident Hotspots

Data obtained from the Malta Police Force reveals that Qormi registered a total of 127 road accidents between January and March this year. This figure outstrips other towns like Birkirkara (97 accidents) and Żabbar (89 accidents) during the same period. The most alarming aspect? Over 60% of these accidents occurred in just five hotspots across the town.

Understanding the Root Causes

To tackle this issue, we must first understand its roots. Qormi’s Mayor, Ing. Rosette Cutajar, attributes the high accident rate to a combination of factors. “Qormi is a central hub with heavy traffic flow,” she explains. “We also have a significant number of industrial activities, which contribute to the traffic volume. some streets are narrow, and parking is often a challenge, leading to drivers’ impatience and, unfortunately, accidents.”

Speeding, distracted driving, and non-compliance with traffic rules also play a significant role, according to Inspector Joseph Vella from the Malta Police Force’s Traffic Department. “We’ve seen an increase in speeding incidents, particularly on the Qormi Bypass and the roads leading to the industrial areas,” he notes. “Education and enforcement are key, but we also need the cooperation of drivers.”

Addressing the Issue: Initiatives and Solutions

Local authorities and the police are taking steps to improve road safety in Qormi. The Qormi Local Council has been working on improving street lighting and signage, while the Malta Police Force has stepped up traffic enforcement in accident hotspots. The council is also exploring the possibility of traffic calming measures, such as speed humps and narrowed road sections, to discourage speeding.

However, Mayor Cutajar emphasizes the importance of collective responsibility. “We all have a role to play in ensuring Qormi’s roads are safe,” she says. “This means adhering to traffic rules, being patient, and looking out for one another. It’s about creating a culture of road safety in our community.”
