Qormi’s Road Safety Crisis: A Spike in Accidents

According to data from the Malta Police Force, Qormi has seen the highest number of road traffic accidents among all local councils in the first three months of the year. A total of 127 accidents were recorded, a figure that has raised eyebrows and sparked concern among locals and authorities alike. This is a significant increase from the same period last year, when Qormi recorded 98 accidents.

Breaking down the numbers, we find that the majority of these accidents occurred on the town’s main roads. Triq l-Indipendenza, Triq San Girgor, and Triq il-Karmnu top the list, with high pedestrian footfall and heavy vehicle traffic contributing to the accidents.

So, what’s behind this spike in accidents? Experts point to a mix of factors. Increased traffic, due to Qormi’s growing population and commercial activity, is one. Another is the town’s narrow streets, which often leave little room for error. Add to this the challenge of managing traffic flow around schools and during peak hours, and you have a recipe for accidents.

Residents and shop owners have also raised concerns about parking, with vehicles often parked on double yellow lines or blocking pedestrian crossings. “It’s a daily struggle,” says Mario, a local shop owner. “Vehicles parked illegally force pedestrians to walk into the road, putting them at risk.”

In response to these concerns, Qormi Local Council has been working on several initiatives to improve road safety. These include installing more traffic calming measures, such as speed humps and pedestrian crossings, and increasing traffic enforcement. The council is also exploring the possibility of pedestrianizing certain areas to make them safer for residents and visitors.

“We’re committed to making our streets safer,” says Mayor Mario Fava. “We’re working closely with the police and other stakeholders to address this issue. We need everyone’s cooperation – drivers, pedestrians, and residents – to make a real difference.”
