Rabat’s New Animal Rehoming Centre: A Haven for Malta’s Furry Friends

Paws for Celebration: Animal Rehoming Centre Plans Unveiled

Imagine, if you will, the bustling streets of Rabat, Malta. The sun is setting, casting a warm glow over the ancient city’s honey-stoned buildings. Amongst the chatter of locals and tourists, a different kind of noise catches your ear. It’s the excited barking of dogs, the contented purring of cats, echoing from the soon-to-be home of Malta’s newest animal rehoming centre.

Hot off the press, we’ve got the scoop on plans for a state-of-the-art animal rehoming centre in Rabat. This isn’t just a shelter; it’s a sanctuary, a place where our furry friends can find love, care, and a second chance at life.

From Rubble to Rehoming: A New Hope for Rabat

Tucked away on Triq il-Kbira, the new centre will rise from the ashes of a derelict building. The site, long a blot on Rabat’s historic scene, will be transformed into a beacon of hope for Malta’s abandoned and neglected animals. The project is a joint venture between the local council and several animal welfare organisations, including the Malta Animal Welfare NGO.

“This is more than just a rehoming centre,” says Dr. Maria Galea, President of MAW. “It’s a statement about our community’s commitment to animal welfare. We’re turning a negative into a positive, giving new life to a derelict site and new hope to countless animals.”

What’s in Store? A Haven for All

The centre will boast a range of facilities designed to provide the best possible care for its furry residents. There’ll be spacious kennels and cat pods, a veterinary clinic, and even a grooming parlour. But it’s not just about the animals. The centre will also include a visitor and education centre, where locals and tourists alike can learn about animal welfare and perhaps even find their new best friend.

“We want this to be a place where people can come, meet our animals, and maybe even fall in love,” says Dr. Galea. “But it’s also about education. We want to teach people about responsible pet ownership, about and spaying, about the joy of adopting, not shopping.”

The centre will also include a memorial garden, a peaceful space where visitors can pay their respects to beloved pets who have passed away.

: A Tail of Progress

The project is expected to break ground later this year, with completion slated for early 2023. But the work has already begun. Volunteers are needed to help with everything from fundraising to construction. If you’re interested in getting involved, keep an eye on the MAW Facebook page for updates.

“This is a big project,” says Dr. Galea. “But we’re not daunted. We know that with the support of our community, we can make this dream a reality. Together, we can create a haven for Malta’s animals, a place where every creature can find love, care, and a second chance at life.”
