Sliema Lido Reclamation: NGOs Sound Alarm

NGOs Sound Alarm on Sliema’s Reclamation ‘Disaster’

Imagine standing at Sliema’s Tigne’ Promenade, the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the Mediterranean in hues of orange and red. Now, picture that view replaced by a wall of concrete and steel. That’s the reality NGOs are warning against as Sliema’s lido land reclamation plans threaten to reshape our coastline.

Reclamation: A Brief History

Land reclamation in Malta isn’t new. From the Three Cities to Msida Creek, we’ve seen our islands grow. But Sliema’s lido, a stretch of coastline that’s been a beach for over a century, is different. It’s one of the few remaining natural beaches in the north, and it’s under threat.

Plans are afoot to reclaim 12,000 square meters of the lido for a mixed-use development, including residential units and a yacht marina. But environmental groups are up in arms, calling the project “pure madness”.

NGOs: ‘A Disaster for Sliema and Malta’

BirdLife Malta, Din l-Art Ħelwa, and the Sliema Local Council are among those leading the charge against the project. They argue that the reclamation will destroy vital habitats, increase coastal erosion, and spoil Sliema’s unique character.

“This is a disaster for Sliema and for Malta,” says Mark Sultana, Director of BirdLife Malta. “The lido is home to numerous species, from birds to fish. It’s also a beloved public space. We’re losing our beaches, and this project is a step in the wrong direction.”

Developer: ‘A Sustainable Project’

On the other side, the developer, Tumas Group, insists the project is sustainable and will bring much-needed regeneration to the area. They promise a green space, public amenities, and a boost to Sliema’s economy.

“We’re committed to preserving the environment and enhancing Sliema’s coastline,” says a spokesperson for Tumas. “The project will create a new public space, with a focus on sustainability and green areas.”

Public Consultation: Have Your Say

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the project is now open for public consultation. This is your chance to have your say. You can access the report and submit your feedback on the Planning Authority’s website.

So, what’s it to be, Malta? A wall of concrete, or a preserved coastline? The future of Sliema’s lido is in our hands.
