Truck Overturns: Lija Roundabout in Chaos
Gravel Spill Chaos: Truck Overturns Near Lija Roundabout
It was just another bustling morning in Lija when the unthinkable happened. A truck laden with gravel lost control near the town’s busy roundabout, sending the vehicle and its cargo sprawling across the road. The scene was a mix of chaos and concern, as commuters and residents alike watched the drama unfold.
Chaos on the Roads
The incident occurred around 9 am, causing immediate gridlock. The roundabout, a major thoroughfare connecting Lija, Balzan, and Attard, was reduced to a snarling mess of honking cars and frustrated drivers. Traffic was diverted, but the spillover onto nearby streets like Triq San Girgor and Triq il-Kunsill was no less chaotic.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as “like something out of a disaster movie.” The truck, a large white Mercedes, had skidded and overturned, its once-neat pile of gravel now scattered across the tarmac like a giant’s marbles. Miraculously, no serious injuries were reported, though the truck driver was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for observation.
Cleanup Operation Underway
Within minutes of the incident, emergency services were on the scene. The Police, Civil Protection Department, and Lija Local Council worked together to clear the road and ensure public safety. The cleanup operation was no small feat. With the help of heavy machinery, workers painstakingly shoveled gravel back into the truck, while others swept up the remaining debris.
By midday, the roundabout was finally reopened to traffic, albeit with some delays. But the cleanup isn’t over yet. Council workers are expected to continue clearing the area over the next few days to ensure no residual gravel poses a hazard to vehicles.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Early reports suggest that the truck may have hydroplaned on the wet road, though this has not been confirmed. The truck, registered to a local construction company, was reportedly en route to a building site in Birkirkara when the incident occurred.
Hot Malta has reached out to the company for comment but has not received a response at the time of publication. We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
In the meantime, residents and commuters are advised to expect some delays in the Lija area over the next few days. The Local Council has assured the public that they are doing everything in their power to restore normal traffic flow as soon as possible.
“We understand the inconvenience this has caused,” said a spokesperson for Lija Local Council. “We’re working tirelessly to ensure our roads are safe and clear for everyone.”
