Archbishop Scicluna Recovers in Malta After Successful Surgery Abroad
In the heart of Valletta, the sun casts a warm glow over the grand, yellow-stoned Archbishop’s Palace. Yet, its usual bustle is tempered today, as Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna continues his recovery after a successful surgery abroad. The Maltese Church’s spiritual leader is convalescing in his native Malta, surrounded by the love and prayers of his flock.
Surgery and Recovery
The Archbishop, who turned 69 earlier this year, underwent a scheduled surgery in a European hospital last month. The Curia, the administrative body of the Maltese Catholic Church, has confirmed that the procedure was successful and that Archbishop Scicluna is now recovering well. He returned to Malta last week and is currently recuperating at his residence in Rabat.
“His Excellency is making a good recovery,” a spokesperson for the Curia told Hot Malta. “He is in good spirits and is grateful for the many messages of support and prayers he has received from the faithful.”
Archbishop’s Leadership During Challenging Times
Archbishop Scicluna’s leadership has been instrumental in guiding the Maltese Church through challenging times. His tenure has seen him address issues such as the Church’s role in society, the sexual abuse scandal that rocked the Church, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on religious life.
In a recent interview with Hot Malta, he reflected on his role, saying, “My duty is to be a father to the people of God in Malta, to guide them, to support them, and to help them grow in their faith.” His commitment to this role has earned him the respect and affection of many Maltese.
: A Return to Public Life
While Archbishop Scicluna continues his recovery, the Curia has assured the public that he is expected to make a full recovery and return to his public duties in the near future. His presence will be missed at the upcoming Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Mosta, where he usually leads the celebrations, but his health takes precedence.
In the meantime, the Maltese Church continues its work, with Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Galea-Curmi and other clergy stepping in to cover the Archbishop’s duties. The Curia has also assured the public that it remains committed to keeping them informed about the Archbishop’s progress.
As the sun sets over the historic streets of Rabat, the Maltese faithful continue to pray for their Archbishop’s swift recovery. They look forward to the day when he will once again lead them in worship and guide them through the challenges and joys of life.
