Clegg in Malta: ‘I’m Cleared, Let’s Move On’
UK’s Former Deputy PM in Malta: ‘I’m Cleared, Let’s Move On’
Malta’s sunny streets echoed with an unexpected political buzz this week. Former UK Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, was in town, not for a holiday, but to address local media about his recent tax woes. The scene was set at the historic Castille Square, where Clegg, with a calm demeanor, declared, “I’m cleared, let’s move on.”
From Westminster to Valletta: A Tax Tale
Clegg, who served as the Deputy PM from 2010 to 2015, found himself in hot water earlier this year. HMRC, the UK’s tax authority, alleged that Clegg had underpaid his taxes by around £134,000. The claim through the political sphere, with many questioning how a man who once held the second-highest office in the UK could make such a mistake.
Clegg, however, maintained his innocence. He claimed that his accountants had made an error, and he was not aware of the underpayment. The matter was settled out of court, with Clegg paying the outstanding amount plus a penalty.
Malta: A New Chapter
Clegg’s visit to Malta was not just a chance to enjoy the island’s Mediterranean charm. He was here to put the tax saga behind him and focus on his new role as the Vice President for Global Affairs and Communications at Facebook. The social media giant has a significant presence in Malta, employing hundreds of people at its Europa Avenue office in Birkirkara.
Clegg, who was in Malta to meet with local Facebook staff, used the opportunity to address the local media. He stated, “I’m glad to have this behind me. I’ve learned from it, and I’m looking forward to focusing on my new role at Facebook.”
Facebook’s Malta Connection
Facebook’s presence in Malta is not just about the sunny climate and affordable cost of living. The island’s strategic location, time zone, and English-speaking workforce make it an ideal hub for the tech giant’s European operations. Facebook’s Malta office is one of the largest in the region, employing locals and expats alike.
Clegg’s role at Facebook will see him working closely with policymakers and regulators across the globe. His political experience, he believes, will be invaluable in this role. “I’ve always been interested in the intersection of technology and politics,” he said, “and I’m looking forward to bringing my experience to bear in this new role.”
