Fundraising event to celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100 years
Malta’s Nature Lovers Set to Celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s Centennial with a Green Fundraiser
Imagine standing on the rugged cliffs of Dingli, the wind whipping your hair as you gaze out at the vast, untouched expanse of the Mediterranean. Now, picture Sir David Attenborough, the man who’s brought us closer to nature than ever, turning 100 years old. What if you could help celebrate his extraordinary life while enjoying Malta’s great outdoors? Here’s how.
Honouring a Lifetime of Exploration
On the 8th of May, Malta’s nature enthusiasts are coming together to honour Sir David Attenborough’s incredible journey. The event, ‘A Walk for Attenborough’, is a fundraising initiative organised by local environmental charity, Nature Trust – Fida, in collaboration with the British High Commission Malta.
“Sir David has inspired generations to appreciate and protect our natural world,” says Dr. Martin Galea, President of Nature Trust – Fida. “We want to celebrate his life and legacy by giving back to Malta’s own wildlife and habitats.”
From Dingli to the Sea
The event kicks off at Dingli Cliffs, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Malta’s most breathtaking landscapes. Participants will embark on a guided nature walk, exploring the unique flora and fauna that call this rugged terrain home. The walk will end at the picturesque Golden Bay, where a beach clean-up will take place, highlighting Malta’s coastal ecosystems.
But the day isn’t just about walking and cleaning. It’s also about celebrating Sir David’s passion for storytelling. “We’ll be sharing some of Sir David’s most memorable moments on screen,” says Dr. Galea. “And we encourage participants to share their own nature stories too.”
Giving Back to Malta’s Wildlife
All funds raised from ‘A Walk for Attenborough’ will go towards Nature Trust – Fida’s conservation projects. This includes their work protecting Malta’s native birds, like the vulnerable Eleanora’s Falcon, and preserving critical habitats like the Mgarr ix-Xini Nature Reserve.
“Malta’s wildlife faces many challenges,” says Dr. Galea. “But with the support of the community, we can make a real difference.”
So, if you’re a nature lover, or simply want to celebrate a life dedicated to exploring our planet, join ‘A Walk for Attenborough’. It’s more than just a walk – it’s a chance to give back, connect with like-minded people, and celebrate the power of storytelling to change the world.
