Voting Made Easy: Hospital Patients & Elderly Residents Get Special Arrangements

Imagine you’re bedridden at Mater Dei, Malta’s largest hospital, or residing at a care home in St. Julian’s. It’s election day, and you’re eager to cast your vote. But how? The Superintendence of Public Health has just announced special voting arrangements to ensure no one is left behind.

Voting at Hospitals: Bedside Ballots

For hospital patients, voting will be brought to their bedsides. The Superintendence, in collaboration with the Electoral Commission, will set up mobile voting stations at Mater Dei, B’Kara General, Gozo General, and St. Luke’s hospitals. Patients will be able to vote from their beds, accompanied by a nurse or doctor if needed. This initiative ensures that Malta’s sick and injured can still play their part in democracy.

Elderly Home Residents: Voting Comes to You

Residents of elderly homes across Malta and Gozo will also have the convenience of voting at their doorstep. The Electoral Commission will visit 75 elderly homes, setting up temporary polling stations. This arrangement caters to the mobility challenges faced by many elderly residents, ensuring they can vote without leaving their homes.

Logistics & Timings

Voting at hospitals and elderly homes will take place on the same day as regular polling stations, May 25th. The mobile stations will be operational from 7 AM to 10 PM, ensuring ample time for patients and residents to cast their votes. The Electoral Commission will also provide assistance to voters with visual impairments or other special needs.

These special arrangements are a testament to Malta’s commitment to inclusive democracy. They ensure that even those facing health challenges or mobility issues can exercise their constitutional right to vote. So, whether you’re a patient at Mater Dei or a resident at Dar il-Karmnu care home in St. Julian’s, your voice will be heard this election day.
