Labour’s Worker Promise Falters, Says PN’s Borg Manché
Conrad Borg Manché: Labour’s ‘Worker-Friendly’ Image Under Scrutiny
In the heart of Malta’s political scene, a familiar face has spoken out, casting a critical eye over the Labour Party’s handling of workers’ rights. Conrad Borg Manché, the Nationalist Party’s (PN) candidate for the 13th District, wasted no time in his first public event, held at the bustling St. George’s Square in Rabat, to voice his concerns.
Labour’s Promises vs Reality
Borg Manché, a lawyer by profession, painted a stark contrast between Labour’s pre-election promises and the current state of workers’ rights. He pointed out that while Labour had pledged to strengthen workers’ rights, the reality, he claimed, is that workers are facing longer hours, less job security, and stagnant wages.
“Labour promised to reduce the working week to 40 hours, but instead, we’ve seen an increase in overtime and flexible hours,” Borg Manché told the crowd. “They promised better job security, but we’re seeing more fixed-term contracts than ever before.”
Minimum Wage: A Missed Opportunity
Borg Manché also took aim at the government’s handling of the minimum wage. He argued that the recent increase was not enough to keep up with the cost of living and that the government had missed an opportunity to make a real difference in workers’ lives.
“The minimum wage should be a living wage,” he said. “It should be enough to live on, not just to survive. But Labour has failed to deliver on this front.”
PN’s Proposals: A Beacon of Hope?
Borg Manché didn’t just stop at criticism, however. He outlined the PN’s proposals for improving workers’ rights, including a 40-hour workweek, better job security, and a genuine living wage. He also pledged to fight for better working conditions and more opportunities for training and career progression.
He concluded his speech by calling on workers to stand up for their rights and to demand better from their government. “We cannot accept that workers should be treated as disposable. We deserve better, and together, we can make that a reality.”
The event was well-attended, with many workers expressing their support for Borg Manché’s message. One attendee, Maria, a retail worker from Rabat, told Hot Malta, “I’ve been struggling to make ends meet, and I think it’s time someone stood up for us. I hope Conrad can make a difference.”
