Lija Roundabout Resurfacing: What You Need to Know

Truck Crash Leaves Lija Roundabout in Need of Resurfacing

Picture this: a bright, sunny morning in Lija, and the usually bustling roundabout at the junction of Triq San Pawl and Triq l-Imqabba is eerily quiet. The reason? A truck, after losing control, has left a sizeable chunk of the roundabout in need of resurfacing. The crash, which fortunately resulted in no serious injuries, has left locals wondering when the repairs will start and how it will affect traffic in the coming weeks.

What Happened?

The incident occurred early last Tuesday when a truck, attempting to navigate the roundabout, lost control and ended up tearing up a significant portion of the tarmac. Witnesses reported that the truck, laden with construction materials, seemed to struggle with the tight turn, eventually skidding and coming to a halt in the middle of the roundabout. The driver was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for minor injuries, while the truck was towed away, leaving behind a gaping hole in the road.

Repair Works Begin

Within days, the Malta Road Authority (MRA) swung into action, cordoning off the affected area and announcing that resurfacing works would commence as soon as possible. “We understand the inconvenience this may cause to road users,” said a spokesperson for the MRA, “but we assure the public that we are working tirelessly to ensure the roundabout is back to its usual state as soon as possible.”

The repair works, expected to take around two weeks, will see the damaged section of the roundabout resurfaced and repainted. The MRA has also assured locals that traffic management measures will be in place to minimize disruption, with temporary traffic lights and diversions expected to be in use during the works.

Local Businesses Brace for Impact

While the MRA works to repair the damage, local businesses are bracing themselves for the potential impact on trade. “We’ve seen a drop in footfall since the crash,” said Joe, owner of a popular café near the roundabout. “People are avoiding the area because of the traffic and the mess. We’re hoping the repairs will be done quickly so we can get back to normal.”

Other local business owners have echoed Joe’s sentiments, with many expressing hope that the MRA will complete the works as soon as possible to minimize the impact on their businesses.

Lessons Learned?

While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, some locals have been questioning whether the roundabout’s design is to blame. “This isn’t the first time we’ve had issues with trucks navigating this roundabout,” said Lija resident, Maria. “Maybe it’s time to rethink the design to make it safer for all road users.”

The MRA has not yet commented on whether any changes to the roundabout’s design are being considered, but with the repair works set to begin soon, all eyes will be on the Lija roundabout in the coming weeks.
