Lija Roundabout to be Resurfaced After Truck Crash

Truck Crash Leaves Lija Roundabout in Need of Resurfacing

Early Monday morning, the usually bustling Lija roundabout was reduced to a flurry of flashing lights and rubbernecking drivers. A truck, its cargo of aggregate spilling onto the road, lay tilted against the central reservation, a stark reminder of the chaos that had unfolded just moments before. The crash, while thankfully resulting in no serious injuries, left the roundabout’s surface pockmarked and damaged, prompting calls for urgent resurfacing.

Cleanup and Repairs Begin

By mid-morning, cleanup operations were underway. Workers, clad in high-vis vests, could be seen shoveling the spilled aggregate back into the truck, while others swept up the remaining debris. The truck, its driver thankfully unharmed, was towed away, leaving behind a roundabout that bore the scars of the morning’s events. The damage, however, was more than cosmetic. The impact of the crash had left the roundabout’s surface cracked and uneven, posing a potential hazard to drivers.

Not long after, word reached the Lija Local Council. Councilor for Infrastructure, Joseph Xuereb, confirmed that the damaged section of the roundabout would indeed need to be resurfaced. “We’re lucky that no one was seriously hurt,” he said, “but the damage to the roundabout is significant. We’re working with the relevant authorities to ensure that the repairs are carried out as soon as possible.”

Residents and Commuters React

News of the impending resurfacing works was met with relief from residents and commuters alike. Maria Azzopardi, a Lija resident of over 20 years, welcomed the news. “I drive through that roundabout every day,” she said, “and I’ve seen firsthand how bad the surface has become. It’s about time something was done about it.”

Commuters, too, were pleased with the development. “I’ve had to swerve to avoid potholes on that roundabout more times than I can count,” said Matthew Camilleri, a regular commuter through Lija. “I’m just glad that something is finally being done about it.”

: What to Expect

The resurfacing works are expected to begin later this week, with the roundabout closed to traffic during the day and reopened at night. While the closure is sure to cause some inconvenience, it’s a small price to pay for a safer roundabout. The works are expected to take around a week to complete, weather permitting.

In the meantime, drivers are advised to take alternative routes where possible and to exercise extra caution when driving through the roundabout. With any luck, the resurfacing works will not only repair the damage caused by the truck crash but also improve the safety and smoothness of the roundabout for years to come.

Councilor Xuereb had this to say: “We understand that these works may cause some inconvenience, but we assure you that they are necessary. We’re committed to ensuring that our roads are safe for everyone to use, and that’s what these works are all about.”
