Lija Roundabout to Get Safer with Resurfacing
Truck Crash Prompts Lija Roundabout Resurfacing
Early morning commuters on Tuesday were met with a jarring sight: a truck lying on its side, blocking the busy Lija roundabout. The crash, which occurred around 6 am, through the usually tranquil town, leading to traffic chaos and a flurry of emergency services activity.
Roundabout Resurfacing: A Necessary Measure
In the aftermath of the crash, it was revealed that a section of the roundabout would be resurfaced. The decision, taken by the Malta Road Network Agency (MRNA), aims to enhance safety and reduce the risk of similar incidents. The works, set to begin next week, will focus on the north-western quadrant of the roundabout, where the truck crash occurred.
“This is not just about fixing a damaged surface,” explained MRNA spokesperson, Joseph Azzopardi. “It’s about making the roundabout safer for everyone. We’ve seen an increase in heavy vehicle traffic, and this resurfacing will help improve grip and visibility.”
Local Businesses Welcome Safety Improvements
News of the resurfacing has been welcomed by local businesses. “Anything that improves safety on our roads is a good thing,” said Mario Debono, owner of the popular Lija bakery, Il-Forno. “We’ve seen an increase in heavy traffic, and this resurfacing should help make the roundabout safer for everyone.”
The resurfacing works are expected to take around two weeks, with the MRNA assuring minimal disruption to traffic flow. “We understand that this is a busy area, so we’ll be working overnight to ensure the least possible inconvenience,” Azzopardi added.
As the Lija roundabout undergoes its transformation, residents and commuters alike can breathe a sigh of relief. The truck crash served as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety, and the resurfacing works are a step in the right direction. With the works set to begin, all eyes are on the Lija roundabout, poised for a safer future.
