Lija Roundabout to Get Safety Boost After Truck Crash

Truck Crash Spurs Lija Roundabout Resurfacing

Early morning commuters on Tuesday were met with an unexpected sight: a truck, its trailer jackknifed, blocking the Lija roundabout. The crash, while thankfully minor, has led to the decision to resurface part of the roundabout, a move welcomed by locals who’ve long felt the area’s safety could be improved.

Roundabout’s Chequered History

The Lija roundabout, a junction of three major roads, has seen its fair share of incidents. Built in the 1990s, it’s been a constant topic of conversation among locals, with many citing its design as a contributing factor to the frequent accidents. The recent truck crash, though not severe, has once again brought the roundabout’s safety into focus.

“I’ve lived in Lija all my life, and I can’t remember a time when there wasn’t some sort of incident at that roundabout,” says Mario Debono, a local resident. “It’s about time something is done about it.”

Resurfacing: A Step Towards Safety

The truck crash has prompted the Malta Road Authority (MRA) to announce plans to resurface part of the roundabout. The works, set to begin next month, will focus on the section where the truck lost control. The MRA has assured that the resurfacing will not only improve the roundabout’s appearance but also enhance its safety features.

“We’ve been monitoring the roundabout for some time now,” says an MRA spokesperson. “The recent incident has given us the impetus to proceed with the resurfacing works. We believe this will not only improve the road’s surface but also enhance its safety features, making it safer for all users.”

: A Safer Lija

The resurfacing works are expected to take around two weeks to complete, with the MRA assuring minimal disruption to traffic flow. While locals welcome the news, many hope that this is just the first step in a larger plan to improve the roundabout’s safety.

“It’s a start,” says Debono. “But we need to keep pushing for more improvements. After all, safety should always be our top priority.”
