Malta Celebrates Sir David Attenborough’s 100 Years

Malta’s Wildlife Enthusiasts Gear Up for Attenborough Centenary Celebration

Imagine, if you will, a bustling St. Julian’s street, not far from the iconic Spinola Bay, where the aroma of freshly baked pastizzi wafts through the air. Now, picture this same scene, but instead of the usual chatter, you hear excited whispers of “Did you know?” and “Have you seen?”. This is no ordinary day; it’s the day Malta’s wildlife enthusiasts gather to celebrate a century of Sir David Attenborough.

Celebrating a Century of Nature’s Storyteller

Sir David Attenborough, the legendary broadcaster and naturalist, turns 100 this year. To mark this monumental occasion, the Malta-based NGO, Nature Trust, is hosting a fundraising event that promises to be as captivating as one of his documentaries. The event, titled “A Century of Attenborough”, will take place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta on the 22nd of May.

The evening will be a tribute to Sir David’s incredible career, spanning over six decades. Expect highlights from his most iconic documentaries, from “Zoo Quest” in the 1950s to “A Perfect Planet” in 2021. But this isn’t just a trip down memory lane. It’s also a chance to reflect on the impact Sir David’s work has had on Malta’s own conservation efforts.

Malta’s Connection to Attenborough’s Legacy

Malta’s unique location in the Mediterranean has made it a haven for wildlife, and Sir David’s work has played a significant role in highlighting this. His documentaries have showcased the islands’ diverse flora and fauna, from the tiny but mighty Maltese wall lizard to the majestic Mediterranean monk seal.

Nature Trust’s President, Dr. Martin Galea Debono, explains, “Sir David Attenborough’s documentaries have inspired generations of Maltese to appreciate and protect our local wildlife. This event is our way of saying thank you and celebrating a century of his incredible work.”

The event will also serve as a fundraiser for Nature Trust’s ongoing projects, including the conservation of the Maltese wall lizard and the protection of the islands’ coastal habitats. So, not only will you be celebrating a broadcasting legend, but you’ll also be contributing to Malta’s own conservation story.

An Evening of Inspiration and Celebration

The evening will kick off with a reception at 6:30 PM, followed by the main event at 7:30 PM. Tickets are €50 and can be purchased online via the Nature Trust website. The event promises to be an inspiring and entertaining evening, perfect for nature lovers and Attenborough fans alike.

As Dr. Galea Debono puts it, “This is more than just a celebration. It’s a chance to look back at what we’ve achieved together and look forward to what we can accomplish in the future.”

So, mark your calendars, Malta. On the 22nd of May, we celebrate a century of Sir David Attenborough, and in doing so, we celebrate our own connection to the natural world.
