Malta Celebrates Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday
Malta’s Biggest Wildlife Celebration: A Centennial Toast to Sir David Attenborough
Imagine, for a moment, the bustling streets of Valletta on a warm summer evening. The usual hum of scooters and chatter is replaced by the excited chatter of children and the soft hum of a projector. This isn’t just any evening; it’s the night Malta comes together to celebrate a broadcasting legend, Sir David Attenborough, as he turns 100.
A Global Celebration, A Local Touch
From the Amazon rainforest to the Great Barrier Reef, Sir David Attenborough has brought the wonders of our planet into our living rooms. Now, it’s Malta’s turn to pay tribute. The ‘A Night for Attenborough’ fundraising event, organised by local NGO Greenhouse, is set to transform the Grandmaster’s Palace Square into an open-air cinema under the stars.
But this isn’t just about watching a film. It’s about bringing together our community, raising funds for local conservation efforts, and inspiring a new generation of environmental stewards. “We wanted to create an event that celebrates Sir David’s incredible work while also highlighting the beauty and fragility of our own Maltese environment,” says Greenhouse’s project coordinator, Maria Grech.
From Attenborough to Malta’s Own Wonders
While the main attraction is a special screening of ‘A Life on Our Planet’, the evening promises more than just a film. Local musicians and artists will perform, and there’ll be a pop-up exhibition showcasing Malta’s own wildlife and habitats. Think stunning shots of the Azure Window (rest in peace), the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Lagoon, and the unique flora and fauna of the Dingli Cliffs.
But the real star of the show? That’s you. “We want everyone to come along, bring a picnic, and enjoy a night under the stars with their community,” says Grech. “It’s not every day we get to celebrate a century of someone who’s done so much for our planet.”
Making a Difference, One Ticket at a Time
All proceeds from the event will go towards Greenhouse’s local projects, including their ‘Adopt a Tree’ initiative and their work protecting Malta’s native species. So, not only will you be treated to a fantastic evening, but you’ll also be making a real difference right here in Malta.
So, mark your calendars for the 27th of May. Grab your picnic blanket, some friends, and head down to the Grandmaster’s Palace Square. Let’s give Sir David the birthday celebration he deserves, Maltese style.
Tickets are €10 and can be bought online at greenhouse.org.mt/events/attenborough.
