Malta Red Cross Launches 24/7 Health Support Line

Malta Red Cross: A New Lifeline for Vulnerable Islanders

Picture this: It’s 3 AM, and you’re home alone, suddenly feeling unwell. You’re not sure if it’s something serious, but you don’t want to risk it. What do you do? This was the scenario that inspired the Malta Red Cross to launch its newest service – a 24/7 health monitoring and support line. Now, help is just a phone call away, day or night.

From Idea to Reality: A Local Initiative

In the heart of Msida, the Malta Red Cross headquarters has been buzzing with activity. The idea for this service was born here, a response to the increasing need for mental health support and chronic disease management, especially during these challenging times. “We saw a gap,” says Mr. Martin Gauci, Director of the Malta Red Cross. “Many people, especially the elderly and those with chronic conditions, were struggling with access to healthcare. We wanted to provide a safety net, a lifeline.”

The service, launched in partnership with the Ministry for Health and the Malta Health Network, is staffed by a team of dedicated healthcare professionals. They’re ready to provide immediate support, from medical advice to emotional reassurance, all from the comfort and safety of your home.

How It Works: Your Health, Your Way

Here’s how it works. If you’re feeling unwell, anxious, or just need someone to talk to, dial 116117. The number is free to call from all networks and landlines. A trained professional will answer, ready to assess your needs and provide the appropriate support. They might offer medical advice over the phone, arrange a call back from a doctor, or even dispatch an ambulance if necessary.

But the service isn’t just for emergencies. It’s also a support line for those struggling with mental health issues. “We understand that mental health isn’t something that keeps office hours,” says Mr. Gauci. “We want people to know that they’re not alone, that help is available, anytime.”

: Expanding the Lifeline

The Malta Red Cross has big plans for this service. They’re looking to expand its reach, perhaps even to include remote monitoring for those with chronic conditions. “We’re exploring the use of technology to make our service even more effective,” says Mr. Gauci. “But for now, we’re just glad to be here, providing a lifeline when people need it most.”

So, the next time you’re feeling unwell or just need someone to talk to, remember, help is just a phone call away. Dial 116117. You’re not alone.
