Malta & the World: Gaza’s Silent Scream

Gaza’s Silent Scream: A Moral Mirror for Malta and the World

Imagine, for a moment, standing on the bustling Republic Street in Valletta. The sun is setting, casting a warm glow over the historic buildings. Now, imagine the streetlights suddenly flicker and die. The city is plunged into darkness, not by a power cut, but by a deliberate act of destruction. This is the reality in Gaza, not for a moment, but for years. This is not a drill, it’s a daily reality for over two million people.

Genocide by Degrees: The Slow Death of Gaza

Gaza, a narrow strip of land along the Mediterranean, has been under an Israeli blockade since 2007. It’s a form of collective punishment that has turned the territory into the world’s largest open-air prison. UN officials have warned that Gaza could become uninhabitable by 2020. We’re in 2023, and the situation is far worse. This is not a sudden collapse, but a slow, systematic genocide by degrees.

In Malta, we enjoy 24/7 electricity, clean water, and internet connectivity. In Gaza, these are luxuries. Power cuts are frequent, with many areas receiving only a few hours of electricity a day. Water is undrinkable due to seawater intrusion and lack of maintenance. The internet is slow and often unavailable. This is not a natural disaster, but a man-made one.

Ecocide: The Slow Death of Gaza’s Environment

Gaza’s environmental degradation is as severe as its humanitarian crisis. The UN estimates that Gaza will run out of drinking water by 2025. Overfishing and pollution have decimated Gaza’s marine life. The coastal strip’s sole power plant was bombed in 2006, and Israel’s blockade prevents its repair. This is not a local issue, but a global one. The world stands by as Gaza’s environment collapses.

Malta, an island nation, understands the importance of a healthy environment. Yet, we’re silent on Gaza’s ecocide. We import Israeli goods, including agricultural produce, despite the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion on the illegality of the Wall and the blockade. We must ask ourselves, are we complicit in Gaza’s slow death?

The Price of Impunity: A Moral Collapse

Impunity has emboldened Israel’s actions. Despite the international community’s condemnation, the blockade continues. The world’s inaction is a moral collapse. We’ve seen this before. The Holocaust, the Rwandan Genocide, the Srebrenica Massacre – all happened due to international inaction. Gaza is another chapter in this sad tale.

Malta, with its history of struggle against oppression, should be at the forefront of the fight for Gaza’s freedom. Yet, our government’s response has been muted. We’ve condemned Israel’s actions, but our actions speak louder than words. We must push for sanctions against Israel until the blockade is lifted. We must demand that our government uses its influence in the EU to pressure Israel.

We must also support local initiatives like the ‘Freedom Flotilla’ that aim to break the blockade. We must boycott Israeli goods and companies that profit from the occupation. We must stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza, not just in words, but in actions.

As we enjoy our freedom and prosperity in Malta, let’s not forget the people of Gaza. Let’s not let their silent scream go unheard. Let’s make Malta a voice for Gaza, a beacon of hope in the darkness.
