Malta Welcomes Costa Fascinosa After France Lifts Lockdown

Cruising Through Crisis: France Lifts Lockdown on Maltese Cruise Ship

Sliema’s bustling cruise terminal, usually a hive of activity, has been eerily quiet lately. But today, it’s abuzz again, albeit with a different kind of energy. The Costa Fascinosa, a 3,000-passenger behemoth, is preparing to disembark its passengers after a week-long lockdown, following a stomach bug outbreak that France blamed on contaminated food.

From Paris to the Mediterranean

It all started in Paris. The French health ministry announced that an outbreak of norovirus, a common stomach bug, had struck the Costa Fascinosa during a stop in Marseille. The ship, operated by Italian company Costa Crociere, had set sail from Civitavecchia, Italy, with a stop in Malta planned before heading to Greece.

In response, French authorities ordered the ship to remain in Marseille for cleaning and passenger screening. But as the ship prepared to leave, French health officials reversed their decision, blaming the outbreak on contaminated food served on board. This allowed the ship to continue its journey, with a stop in Malta still on the cards.

Malta Welcomes the Fascinosa

As the Costa Fascinosa approached Malta, health authorities were ready. The Superintendence of Public Health, in collaboration with the Malta Maritime Authority and the Armed Forces of Malta, swung into action. Passengers were screened, and those showing symptoms were isolated. The ship was given the all-clear to dock at the Sliema cruise terminal.

But the drama wasn’t over yet. A group of passengers, fearing they might have been infected, refused to disembark. They were eventually convinced to leave the ship, with some even enjoying a day of sightseeing in Valletta before returning to the ship for its departure to Greece.

Lessons Learned

The Costa Fascinosa‘s journey has been a rollercoaster, but it’s also provided valuable lessons. Cruise ships are floating cities, and outbreaks can happen. But with swift action and cooperation between different authorities, the situation can be contained and passengers protected.

Malta, with its strategic location and strong health infrastructure, has once again shown it’s ready to face such challenges. As the cruise industry looks to bounce back from the pandemic, Malta’s response to this outbreak sends a clear message: we’re open for business, and we’re ready to welcome cruise ships safely.

As the Costa Fascinosa sets sail for its next destination, one thing is clear. The cruise industry, like the Mediterranean itself, is a vast, interconnected web. What happens in one port can have repercussions in others. But with vigilance, cooperation, and a commitment to safety, we can navigate these choppy waters together.
