Malta’s Aidan Ready to Shine at Eurovision
‘Confident and excited’ Aidan is ready to ‘make Malta proud’ at Eurovision
Malta’s streets are abuzz with anticipation. Posters of Aidan Corkish, our island’s representative at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, are plastered on every corner, from the bustling Republic Street in Valletta to the quaint streets of Rabat. The question on everyone’s lips? Is this the year Malta finally breaks into the top 10?
From local stages to the world’s biggest
Aidan’s journey to Rotterdam isn’t your typical overnight success story. The 20-year-old singer-songwriter has been honing his craft on Malta’s local music scene for years. From performing at the annual Malta Music Awards to gigging at popular local venues like Hugo’s Terrace in Paceville, Aidan’s talent has been simmering, ready to boil over onto the international stage.
His Eurovision journey began last December when he won the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with his powerful ballad, ‘I Am What I Am’. The song, written by Aidan himself along with Muxu and Luke Fisher, has already resonated with Maltese fans, topping local charts and racking up thousands of views on YouTube.
Preparing for the big stage
Aidan’s preparation for Eurovision has been intense. He’s been working with a team of professionals, including vocal coach Iggy Fenech and choreographer Kelsey Anne Bonello, to ensure his performance in Rotterdam is nothing short of spectacular. Rehearsals have been taking place at the iconic Malta Shipbuilding in Paċi, with Aidan’s team transforming the industrial space into a mini Eurovision stage.
But it’s not just about the performance. Aidan is also brushing up on his languages. As part of the contest’s rules, he’s learning to sing ‘I Am What I Am’ in French and Italian. “It’s challenging,” Aidan admits, “but it’s also a great opportunity to connect with more people.”
Malta’s Eurovision history and Aidan’s chance to make an impact
Malta has been participating in the Eurovision Song Contest since 1971, but our island nation has yet to secure a win. Our best result was in 2005 when Chiara took second place with ‘Angel’. Aidan is hopeful that this year could be different. “I’m not just representing myself,” he says, “I’m representing Malta, and I want to make everyone proud.”
With his powerful voice, emotive lyrics, and a team of dedicated professionals behind him, Aidan is ready to give it his all. Whether he wins or not, one thing is certain: Aidan Corkish is about to make Malta’s name echo loud and clear on the world’s biggest music stage.
So, on the evening of May 22nd, as Aidan takes to the stage in Rotterdam, let’s all raise our voices in support. After all, he’s not just singing for himself; he’s singing for every Maltese person who’s ever dreamt of making it big. Let’s cheer him on, loud and proud.
