Malta’s Eurovision Stage: A Symphony of Opera and Innovation

As the sun sets over the Mediterranean Sea, the Maltese island transforms into a vibrant stage for the 65th Eurovision Song Contest. This year, the stage design is not just a backdrop, but a tribute to the grandeur of Viennese opera, brought to life in the heart of the Mediterranean. But how did this unique blend of art and innovation come to be?

From Vienna to Valletta: The Opera Connection

The stage design, masterminded by Malta’s own, Joe Matera, is a love letter to the opulent world of opera. “Growing up, I was always captivated by the grandeur of the Vienna State Opera,” Matera explains. “I wanted to bring that same sense of awe and spectacle to the Eurovision stage.”

The design is inspired by the iconic horseshoe-shaped auditorium of the Vienna State Opera, with a modern twist. “We’ve taken the traditional red and gold colour scheme and given it a futuristic makeover,” Matera says. “Think of it as a blend of old-world elegance and cutting-edge technology.”

Malta’s Craftsmanship: Building the Stage

The stage is being built at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali, a short drive from Valletta. Here, a team of local craftsmen and technicians are working tirelessly to bring Matera’s vision to life. “It’s a massive undertaking,” says Tony Attard, the project manager. “But we’re proud to be showcasing Malta’s craftsmanship on this global stage.”

The stage is not just a feast for the eyes, but also a technological marvel. It features a state-of-the-art LED screen that wraps around the audience, creating an immersive experience. “We want viewers at home to feel like they’re right there in the audience,” Matera says.

Eurovision Meets Opera: A Night to Remember

On the night of the grand final, the stage will come alive with a symphony of light, sound, and music. “We’re planning some surprises that will pay homage to both the world of opera and the spirit of Eurovision,” Matera teases.

For the first time in Eurovision history, the stage will also feature a live orchestra. “We’re bringing the best of both worlds – the drama of opera and the energy of pop music,” Matera says. “It’s going to be a night to remember.”

As the curtains rise on the 65th Eurovision Song Contest, Malta will not just be hosting the event, but also leaving its unique mark on it. This is more than just a stage – it’s a testament to Malta’s rich cultural heritage and its commitment to innovation.

“This is our moment to shine,” Matera says. “And we’re doing it in true Maltese style – with a blend of tradition and modernity, of art and technology. It’s going to be spectacular.”
