Malta’s First Animal Rehoming Centre Coming to Ta’ Qali

Pawsitive News: Animal Rehoming Centre Set for Malta’s Ta’ Qali

Imagine this: a sprawling, green space in Ta’ Qali, the heart of Malta’s central region, buzzing with a different kind of activity. Instead of the usual bustle of markets and shops, picture a haven for our furry friends, a place where they can find love, care, and a new home. This is not a dream, but a reality set to unfold with the announcement of Malta’s first dedicated animal rehoming centre.

From Vision to Reality

The Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) and the Animal Welfare Department (AWD) have joined forces to turn this vision into a reality. The centre, set to be established on a 1,000 square metre plot within Ta’ Qali’s industrial estate, will be a breakthrough for animal welfare in Malta.

“We’ve been working tirelessly to find a suitable location for such a centre,” says Dr. Antonella Gauci, Director of the AWD. “Ta’ Qali is perfect – it’s central, accessible, and offers ample space for both animals and visitors.”

More Than Just a Shelter

The rehoming centre will be more than just a shelter. It will be a hub, a place where animals can be rehabilitated, socialised, and ultimately, rehomed. It will also serve as an educational centre, teaching the public about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.

“We want to create a space where people can come, meet our animals, and learn about the joy and responsibility of pet ownership,” says Dr. Gauci. “We believe that education is key to changing attitudes towards animal welfare in Malta.”

Community Involvement and Beyond

The centre will rely heavily on community involvement. Volunteers will be crucial in the day-to-day running of the centre, from caring for the animals to helping with administrative tasks. Local businesses are also encouraged to get involved, with sponsorship opportunities available.

But the impact of this centre will extend beyond Malta’s shores. “We hope to attract international interest too,” says Dr. Gauci. “This could be a model for other small islands looking to improve their animal welfare standards.”

So, mark your calendars, Malta. A new chapter in our island’s animal welfare story is about to begin. And it’s happening right in the heart of Ta’ Qali.
