Malta’s First Animal Rehoming Centre Coming to Ta’ Qali
Paws for Joy: Animal Rehoming Centre Set to Transform Ta’ Qali
Imagine a sprawling field in the heart of Ta’ Qali, where the hum of traffic from the nearby Marsa traffic junction is the only reminder of the bustling world outside. Now, picture that field filled with the wagging tails and purring purrs of dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes. This is not a dream, but a reality set to unfold with the announcement of Malta’s first dedicated animal rehoming centre.
From Barren Field to Pawsome Haven
The Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) has revealed plans to transform a 1,500 square metre plot in Ta’ Qali into a state-of-the-art animal rehoming centre. The centre, a joint venture between MCVS and animal welfare organisation No Place Like Home (NPLH), will provide a safe and comfortable space for stray and abandoned animals, giving them a fighting chance at adoption.
The current system, which relies heavily on foster homes and small shelters, often leads to overcrowding and stress for the animals. The new centre aims to address these issues, offering a spacious, purpose-built facility that caters to the physical and psychological needs of the animals in its care.
What’s in Store for Ta’ Qali’s Newest Residents?
The centre will boast a range of features designed to make life as comfortable as possible for its furry inhabitants. These include:
- Separate, spacious kennels and cattery blocks to minimise stress and disease transmission.
- A quarantine area to isolate new arrivals and prevent the spread of illness.
- Play and exercise areas, allowing dogs to stretch their legs and cats to explore and climb.
- A veterinary clinic for on-site treatment and care.
- Adoption and visitor areas, where potential new owners can meet and interact with the animals.
Community Involvement: More Than Just a Shelter
The centre is not just a shelter; it’s a community project. MCVS and NPLH are inviting local businesses and individuals to get involved, whether it’s through volunteering, sponsorship, or donations. The centre will also host educational workshops and events, aiming to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.
the centre will serve as a hub for animal welfare organisations across Malta, providing a centralised space for collaboration and resource sharing.
MCVS CEO, Clifton Grima, expressed his excitement about the project: “This centre will be a breakthrough for animal welfare in Malta. It’s not just about providing a safe space for these animals, but also about changing mindsets and creating a more compassionate community.”
Construction on the centre is set to begin in early 2023, with an estimated completion time of 12 months. Once open, the centre will be the first of its kind in Malta, setting a new standard for animal rehoming and welfare on the island.
