Malta’s Silence on Gaza: Time to Speak Up

In the Heart of Valletta: A Mother’s Cry Echoes the Gaza Crisis

In the bustling heart of Valletta, Malta’s capital, a woman’s voice pierces the air. She’s not selling souvenirs or calling out to tourists, but her cry is no less urgent. “Gaza, Gaza,” she wails, holding up a placard, her eyes reflecting the desperation of a mother thousands of miles away. This is not an isolated scene. Across Malta, from the quiet streets of Birkirkara to the coastal towns of Sliema, voices are rising in solidarity with Gaza.

Genocide and Ecocide: The Unseen Horror

Gaza, a tiny strip of land on the Mediterranean, is under siege. Since 2007, Israel’s blockade has turned Gaza into the world’s largest open-air prison. Over two million Palestinians live here, many in UN refugee camps, their lives a daily struggle. The recent escalation has brought the world’s attention back to Gaza, but the crisis is far from new. It’s a story of occupation, of walls and checkpoints, of homes reduced to rubble, and of a people denied their basic rights.

But Gaza’s crisis is not just about people. It’s about the land itself. The United Nations warns that Gaza could become uninhabitable by 2020. Water is undrinkable, electricity is scarce, and the air is thick with pollution. This is ecocide, the destruction of the natural world, and it’s happening right under our noses.

Malta’s Role: From Safe Haven to Silent Observer

Malta, an island nation that has known its share of struggle, has a unique perspective on the Gaza crisis. For many Palestinians, Malta was a safe haven during the Nakba, the Arabic term for the ‘catastrophe’ that befell the Palestinians in 1948. Today, Malta is home to a small but vibrant Palestinian community. Yet, when it comes to Gaza, Malta’s voice has been notably silent.

Malta’s strategic location has made it a key player in Mediterranean politics. It’s high time we use this position to push for an end to the Gaza crisis. We can start by demanding an end to the blockade, by pressing for the right of return for Palestinian refugees, and by calling for an independent investigation into Israel’s actions.

We are not asking for the impossible. Other small nations have done it. Ireland, for instance, led the way in recognizing Palestine. It’s time for Malta to step up and show the world that we stand for justice, for humanity, and for the right to a clean, healthy environment.

What Can You Do?

Gaza is far, but its crisis is close. It’s in the cry of the woman in Valletta, in the news reports we read, in the stories we tell. It’s in our hands to make a difference. Write to your MP, sign petitions, join protests, educate yourself and others. Let’s not let Gaza’s crisis fade from our collective memory. Let’s not let another mother cry out in vain.

As Maltese, we have a unique responsibility. We’ve been on the receiving end of injustice. We know what it’s like to fight for our rights. Let’s use that experience to stand with Gaza. Let’s not be silent observers. Let’s be the voice that echoes around the world, demanding justice for Gaza.
