Malta’s Wage Gap: North vs. South

Wage Gap in Malta: A Tale of Two Cities

Imagine this: two teachers, both dedicated, both passionate, but one earns €1,500 less each month than the other. Why? Because they live in different towns. Welcome to Malta’s wage gap, where your postcode can dictate your paycheque.

North vs. South: The Divide

In the heart of Malta, the bustling streets of Sliema and St. Julian’s hum with activity. Here, the average monthly wage is around €2,500. Now, drive down to Żebbuġ, a rural town in the south, where the average monthly wage drops to around €1,900. That’s a €600 difference, every month.

This isn’t just about teachers. It’s about everyone – from nurses in Birkirkara to chefs in Paceville. The wage gap in Malta is real, and it’s significant. According to the National Statistics Office, the average monthly wage in Malta’s northern regions is €2,250, compared to €1,850 in the south.

Why the Gap?

The reasons behind this divide are complex. Some point to the cost of living, which is higher in urban areas. Others blame the concentration of jobs in certain sectors, like tourism and finance, in specific regions. Then there’s the issue of education and skills – access to quality education varies across Malta, and this can impact earning potential.

But there’s also a more insidious factor at play – discrimination. A 2021 survey by the Malta Employers’ Association found that 40% of respondents believed there was some form of discrimination in the workplace, with women and foreign nationals being the most affected.

Bridging the Gap

So, what can be done? The Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector is calling for better enforcement of equal pay laws. The Malta Union of Teachers wants more investment in education in rural areas. Others suggest incentivizing businesses to set up shop in the south.

But change won’t happen overnight. It requires concerted effort from government, employers, and employees alike. It requires us to look beyond our own backyards and ask: what can we do to ensure that every worker in Malta is truly equal?

As Malta continues to grow and develop, let’s not forget the people left behind. Let’s not let our postcodes dictate our paycheques. Because in Malta, all workers may be equal, but until we bridge this gap, some are more equal than others.
