Man Remanded Over Alleged Violent Sexual Assault in Birkirkara

Man Remanded After Alleged Violent Sexual Assault on Former Partner in Birkirkara

In the quiet, residential streets of Birkirkara, a man was arrested and remanded this week following an alleged violent sexual assault on his former partner. The incident, which took place in a third-floor apartment on Triq il-Karmnu, has through the usually peaceful community, leaving neighbours and locals alike in a state of disbelief.

Allegations and Arrest

According to court documents, the 32-year-old man, a resident of Birkirkara, was accused of violently assaulting his 28-year-old former partner on the night of Sunday, March 12. The woman, who lives in the same apartment block, managed to escape and alert neighbours, who then called the police. The man was arrested at the scene and later charged with rape and causing actual bodily harm.

The victim was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment, where she was found to have sustained injuries consistent with the alleged assault. She has since been discharged and is receiving support from the police and social services.

Community Reaction and Support

News of the alleged assault has sparked outrage among Birkirkara residents. “This is not the Birkirkara we know,” said Maria, a long-time resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We’re a close-knit community, and this kind of violence has no place here.”

Local councillor, Joseph Muscat, echoed these sentiments, stating, “Our community is in shock. We stand united in condemning this alleged act of violence and offer our full support to the victim.” The local council has also reached out to the victim, offering assistance and support.

Legal Proceedings and Next Steps

The accused, who has pleaded not guilty, was remanded in custody by Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech following a preliminary inquiry. The court also issued a protection order, banning the accused from approaching or communicating with the victim.

The case will proceed to a full trial, with the next hearing scheduled for April 26. The police have appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation.

Superintendent of Police, Philip Vella, urged anyone who has experienced or witnessed domestic violence to report it to the police. “We have specialist officers trained to deal with these sensitive cases,” he said. “No one should have to live in fear.”
