Man Remanded in Custody Over Alleged Violent Sexual Assault in Birkirkara
In the quiet, tree-lined streets of Birkirkara, a man was arrested and remanded in custody this week, accused of a violent sexual assault on his former partner. The incident, which allegedly took place in the man’s apartment on Triq il-Kbira, has through the usually peaceful community.
The Allegations
The 35-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday following a complaint from his 32-year-old former partner. The woman alleges that she was violently sexually assaulted by the man in his apartment on Monday evening. She managed to escape and sought help from a neighbour, who then contacted the police.
The accused, a local resident, was taken into custody and later remanded in custody by Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech on Wednesday. The court was told that the woman had visible injuries consistent with her allegations. The man, who is unemployed, was not present in court due to COVID-19 protocols.
Community Reaction
News of the alleged assault has sparked outrage in the close-knit community of Birkirkara. Neighbours, who knew the couple, expressed their shock and disbelief. “We never thought something like this could happen here,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous.
